Tasks

As a Senior Engineer in Distribution Planning, you will lead the medium- to long-term strategic planning of EPCOR’s Distribution and Transmission Inc (EDTI) electric distribution system. Your responsibilities will include identifying system limitations, evaluating and integrating emerging technologies into the grid, and developing innovative solutions to support future load growth. You will also develop and evaluate the technical, economic and societal merits of the proposed solutions. -Conduct, stamp, and authenticate engineering studies to identify acceptable operating modes that will maintain all equipment within their operating limits; provide guidance/operating critieria to ensure that the system is always operated in a safe and reliable manner -Liaise with Distribution Operations Engineers, System Control operators and other operating personnel then incorporate operational insights and concerns into the planning of the distribution system -Provide input into the annual budgeting process with respect to projects initiated by the Distribution Planning group -Ensure the electric distribution system delivers optimal results against appropriate performance metrics in order to meet customers needs for reliable electricity, while supporting engineering and operations groups -Act as a consultant to internal stakeholders for distribution planning insights to internal stakeholders -Provide technical guidance to other planning engineers and mentor junior level engineers -Prepare the necessary business cases in support of regulatory filings -Lead the development, implementation and review of distribution planning processes to ensure compliance with policies, standards, regulatory requirements and mitigate system risks; lead the development of accurate and up-to-date data power flow models, long-term load forecast for EDTI points of delivery, and preparation of Need Identification Documents to justify enhancements or reconfigurations of the electric transmission system -Plan for the interconnection of distributed generation and other distributed energy resources, in accordance with applicable Alberta Reliability Standards, ISO Rules and EDTI’s technical guidelines -Establish relationships and collaborate effectively with internal stakeholders across EPCOR and externally, including the City of Edmonton’s Integrated Infrastructure Services, AESO, AUC, and industry working groups -Lead the development of distribution design/planning philosophy, guidelines, practices, processes and criteria, as required under changing industry, system conditions, and grid transformation -Identify technical solutions that are feasible and align with EDTI’s Long Term Plan; act as technical expert for the development of electric distribution system plans

What You Bring

-Demonstrated ability to lead complex projects, manage budgets, solve highly technical problems, and manage cross-functional teams -Professional Engineer with B. Sc. in Electrical Engineering registered with APEGA -To meet the physical demands required of some positions, candidates must be in good physical condition and willing to work in all weather conditions. Clearance on pre-placement medical and drug and alcohol testing may be required. -If you are considered for the position, clearance on all applicable background checks (which may include criminal, identity, educational, and/or credit) and professional reference checks is required. Some EPCOR positions require an enhanced level of background assessment, which is dictated by law. These positions require advanced criminal record checks that must also be conducted from time to time after commencement of employment. -Excellent knowledge of CYME and other simulation softwares for load flow, power quality and short circuit analysis -Excellent analytical and decision-making skills -Familiarity with SCADA, Outage Management Systems (OMS), Distribution Management System (DMS), Advanced Metering Infrastruture (AMI) and Distribution Automation (DA) -10+ years of progressively responsible experience in the planning of electric distribution systems -Strong communication and collaboration skills -Excellent understanding of regulatory concepts as related to distribution system planning -Demonstrated ability to apply advanced distribution system planning concepts and work with large data sets -Expertise in the use of power system analysis software for studies such as load flow, short circuit analysis, protection coordination, power quality, etc. -Exposure to Pythone, AZURE, DataBricks, Snowflake or similar data warehousing tools is considered an asset -Experience in the use of Microstation CAD and GeoEngineering -A requirement of working for EPCOR is that you are at least 18 years of age, successfully attained a high school diploma (GED, or equivalent level of secondary education) and legally entitled to work in Canada. (A copy of a valid work permit may be required.) -Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access), Visual Basic Applications, automated tools and online conferencing applications
