The Role

Overview

Design highways, streets, drainage; prepare plans, estimates, and project documentation.

Tasks

-Assist in preparing cost estimates, reports, and technical memos -Engineering design including geometric design of highways and streets, drainage design (hydrology and hydraulics) -Prepare construction plans and project displays -Assist in roadway plan set design & production including roadway alignments, cross-sections, drainage, maintenance of traffic and erosion and sedimentation control -Prepare memorandums summarize analysis work

-Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening to ensure a safe and productive work environment. Volkert adheres to federal guidelines, which may include testing for substances such as marijuana. Please note that federal regulations may differ from state-specific guidelines -EI Certification or PE License (if eligible) -Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering -Self-motivated to meet individual goals and maintain accountability in a team environment -Valid driver’s license -A satisfactory motor vehicle report (MVR) -Familiarity with state and FHWA design standards, guidelines, and policies -General interpersonal skills including active listening, teamwork, responsibility, dependability, leadership, motivation, flexibility, and patience -Effective verbal and written communication skills -Proficient in the use of MS Office tools such as Excel, Word, and Powerpoint -ALDOT or local government design experience preferred -1 – 5 years of experience -Knowledge of fundamental transportation standards -Experience with computer programs such as MicroStation, ArcGIS, InRoads, various CAD, and OpenRoads Designer -Able to maintain project schedules, which may require occasional extended hours and overnight travel
