The Role

Overview

Design and oversee NYC public school structural projects as a civil/structural engineer

Tasks

-Perform design review of work for engineering portions of multiple projects. -May act as a discipline leader in a department to train and develop internal staff in the architectural discipline. -May function as a project leader reporting to an Engineer/Architect B or Engineer/Architect C, Managing Architect, Managing Engineer, or Director to plan and coordinate work with other Engineers and Architects. -Perform design review of work prepared by other engineers/architects. -Maintain and develops general understanding of architectural and engineering principles. -Perform and/or supervises the preparation of scope, pre-schematic, schematic, preliminary and construction documents including reports, calculations, drawings, and specifications. -Provides mentoring for professional development of lower level employees. -Perform review for either Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) or New Building Projects. -Performs design review of work prepared by other engineers/architects. -Supervise the review of contractor’s submittals. -May coordinate the work of consulting firms and/or individual consultants and contingent staff on projects and does design review of outside consultants. -Provide overall coordination for in-house design projects. -Work with a wide range of technical, professional, managerial and support personnel as well as outside consultants, contractors, vendors, and various government agencies. -Monitor the progress of the construction phase of the project. -May coordinate the work of consulting firms and/or individual consultants and contingent staff on projects. -Responsible for performing work in a variety of assignments and technical roles, as needed. -Engineer - C is responsible for performing work in a variety of assignments and technical roles, as needed, and manages team members and/or contractors on projects to achieve the objectives of the Authority. -Engineer B may supervise lower-level Architects and Engineers, Technical Inspectors, Quality Assurance Specialists, Associate Architects and Associate Engineers, and Architectural/Engineering Technicians. -Assists in preparing new design standards and procedures. -May direct Associate Engineers/Architects and Architectural/Engineering Technicians, and/or Technical Inspectors working on several less complex design and construction projects, such as new schools, modernizations, additions, leased space, and Capital Improvement Projects (CIP). -Work on several more complex design projects such as large primary schools, small intermediate schools, special types of buildings (e.g., special education schools), full modernizations, large additions, and specialized and/or numerous CIP projects. -Prepare field reports. -Conduct site observations. -Ensures compliance to codes, standards, and that the project is completed on schedule. -May be required to sign, seal and file engineering drawings. -Performs the duties of Architect - A when necessary. -Works as a project leader on multiple, complex construction projects and major design and exploration programs to plan, assign, direct, manage, and supervise the work of stakeholders such as Engineers, Architects, Quality Assurance Specialists, Technical Inspectors, Associate Engineers, Associate Architects, and Architectural/Engineering Technicians, resolving any problems that occur. -May chair or participate in department seminars and workshops. -Manages multiple projects simultaneously. -Trains new SCA employees and contingent staff, as well as outside design consultants, on SCA standards and procedures.
