Senior Staff Failure Analysis Engineer

Bloom Energy

The Role

Overview

Lead failure analysis of fuel cell components, drive root cause, and improve product reliability.

Key Responsibilities

  • failure analysis
  • root cause
  • fracas
  • statistical data
  • cross‑functional
  • metric creation

Tasks

-Performs Failure analysis of Fuel cell components primarily BOP parts. ; FA- 1st and 2nd level -Make a plan to perform systematic tear down and measurement to understand the root cause. -Evaluates parts to their technical specifications, and use cases vs the actual condition -Collaborate with Field Service on best method to perform FA to get efficient and fast results. -Obtain parts from field returns for failure analysis and perform investigation of the operating conditions in the field and understand the cause of the failures. -Document the failure analysis results in detail including word description, pictures, measurements, etc. as evidence to the results, and conclusions. -Develops and systematically analyzes statistical data to determine standards and to ensure product quality and reliability expectations -Work with Engineering to “turn on” and “turn off” the failure modes in testing. -Utilize 3rd party labs as necessary for analysis that Bloom does not have inhouse capability. -Work cross functionally with Factory, Design, Install Quality, SQE to mitigate and prevent failures -Utilizes FRACAS (Failure Reporting and Corrective Action System) Process or other systems to record the failure analysis results -Work with Quality to contain “suspect range” of product and proactive repair, checking, or return from field of affected population. -Work with Fleet Analytics leader to inform of potential failure modes, and symptoms that may be indicative, so proactive sweeps can be done. -Conducts RCCAs, prescribes CA and PA as necessary to prevent recurrence and verifies/validates effectiveness -Work cross functionally with Service, Install Quality, Reliability, SQE, and Logistics to address failures expeditiously -Work with SQE to document RMA return on supplier failing parts in field -Work with Engineering to improve self diagnostics of products to “annunciate” their potential failures based on changes in self monitored values -Build lessons learned into the next generation products -Ensure priority is given to fast-track FA for critical parts. -Work with in-house engineers, or quality personnel to utilize equipment to perform the failure analysis. -Determine the sampling plan for failed parts when repetitive symptoms are indicating a known problem. -Perform failure analysis of BOP and Hot Box parts, or Server parts -Work with controls team and the data analytics team to add detection of early symptoms of field issues that are happening after some time in the field. -Assists reliability group in predicting, or analyzing AFRs of parts based on failure modes. -Create metrics to measure failed parts, and turn around times for FA.
