The Role

Overview

Provide personal care, medication administration, and support to seniors in a retirement residence.

Tasks

-Supports residents’ optimal level of functioning in their activities of daily living, while respecting their rights and choices. -Maintains accurate records of observations and procedures performed. Completes all required reports. -Assists in monitoring the outcome of specific interventions regularly and offers information or suggestions for improvement. -Participates in and adheres to continuous quality improvement standards. -Complies with all corporate policies and procedures. -Assists in monitoring the outcome of specific interventions regularly and offers suggestions for improvement to reporting supervisor. Provides report to oncoming staff. -Assists in maintaining a neat, clean and safe environment for residents and personnel. Recognizes safety hazards and takes appropriate action. -Reports all incidents and changes in resident status to Health & Wellness Manager, and subsequent shift as well as completes shift report. -Performs laundry and housekeeping duties as assigned. -Complies with infection control protocols as directed, e.g. outbreak management. -Reports any deviations in the plan of care and reason for it to the immediate supervisor. -Completes all required mandatory training/education. -Provides direct resident care, in accordance with current and approved standards of care, policies and procedures for effective resident care, taking into account the physical, spiritual, social and emotional needs of the individual. -Observes, reports, and documents changes in the residents’ physical and emotional condition in a timely fashion that ensures residents’ immediate needs are met. -Participates in the development of department goals and objectives, promoting team building, and achieving customer satisfaction. -Complies with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, and Workplace Hazardous Material Information System/Globally Harmonized System. This includes recognizing health and safety hazards, reporting incidents, fulfilling responsibilities under the applicable legislation, as well as participating in in-services and fire drills. Participates in the ongoing Fire Prevention, and Pest Control programs and any other programs as required. -Administers medication and treatments in accordance with current approved standards of care, and UCP policies and procedures. -Clears tables in dining room as requested. -Assists with setting up resident breakfast as required. -Assists with safekeeping of all medication in the residence. -Participates as a member of the multi-disciplinary team in the development of, and implementation of, a plan of care for residents that supports independence. -Serves beverages and resident meals in dining room as required. -Ensures residents’ living space and personal belongings are kept clean, free from safety hazards, and organized according to residents’ personal choice. -Utilizes equipment and supplies effectively and in accordance with policies and procedures, manufacturer’s instructions, and health and safety regulations.

What You Bring

-Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbally, in the English language, nurturing excellent human relations with residents, families and other team members. -Maintains effective communication, both written and verbal with co-workers, residents and guests. Uses the appropriate lines of communication with supervisory staff. -Has obtained certificate from an approved PSW program, and an approved UCP pharmacology training. -Ability to work with supervision and to meet resident care needs, demonstrating initiative and problem-solving skills. -Dependable, responsible and an ability to work well with others in a team environment and independently. Demonstrates a positive attitude necessary to meet the goals and standards of the residence. -Previous experience as a Health Care Aide/PSW/RSA working with seniors is considered an asset. -Understands and practices pharmacy UCP policies and procedures. -Minimum of grade 12 education required -Certified in Emergency First Aid Level 1, and CPR.
