Tasks

-Provides advice to project personnel, keeping them informed of project construction plan changes. -Writes detailed descriptions of survey site control points and monuments for geodetic positions and later recovery. -Sets or directs others to set traffic control signals on job site for workers’ safety. -Operates a variety of survey equipment including Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite receivers, total stations, and electronic levels to establish horizontal and vertical control. -Performs daily tasks by demonstrating proper procedures for using specialized equipment. -Reviews subordinates’ work in progress, or upon completion, to ensure the accuracy and completeness of computations and measurements. -While performing the duties of this job, physical demands of the employee include frequent sitting, moving, standing, talking, hearing, and occasional balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling, grasping, and feeling. This job may occasionally require operating a company vehicle, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 35 lbs. -Directs and assists a survey crew on multiple transportation construction projects. -Directs and assists a field survey crew to locate existing survey monuments, sets traverse points for control, sets new survey monuments for use as control points, and paints and/or sets targets for aerial mapping. -Compiles field survey books. -Composes and completes a transit book to record all survey data. -Makes minor adjustments to the methods and workflow to accommodate changing conditions. -Prepares maps, diagrams, and sketches, annotates photographs and writes field survey notes. -Prepares and surveys assigned locations. -Verifies locations of construction project items in the field and in the plans. -Draws maps for each project, notes angles, distances, and calculates slopes. -Performs other related duties such as testing and maintaining survey equipment and operation and maintaining assigned vehicles. -Clarifies and interprets plans for subordinates, project field personnel, and contractor personnel.

What You Bring

-Explains and demonstrates basic survey field methods to other field personnel. -Experience with operating survey instruments including electronic total stations, digital and automatic levels, GPS equipment and robotics, and entering data in electronic surveying equipment, field books, and computers. -Minimum ten years field surveying experience or Land Surveyor-in-Training (LSIT). -This hybrid job operates between an office environment and a field environment and routinely requires the use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and copy machines. May require occasional exposure to work environments that may include inclement weather, heat, humidity, noise, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and bodies of water, depending on project requirements. -Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. -RLS, NICET Level III, or NSPS Level III Certification -Excellent communication skills. -Experience providing heavy construction staking/layout for transportation structures (i.e. bridges, underpasses, overpasses, etc).
