Tasks
-Continuously seek opportunities to reduce tax and mitigate tax risks related to the domestic and international income tax areas. -Proactively engage in continual learning, professional development and self-study of new tax legislation, administrative positions, case law, etc. that will impact the company's businesses and advise in the development of company positions. -Successfully building relationships and trust with other leaders across the business unit and functions and making recommendations as required. -Interact extensively with business unit and functional personnel, external advisors, external business partners and peers, industry associations, and government policymakers, legislators and auditors. -Work closely with Canadian tax department counterparts on transactions that have impact in both Canada and the international jurisdictions. -Based on the relevant facts and applicable tax law, determine recommended tax positions for the company to take with respect to various items across its businesses. -Manage complex, long-term projects. -Support risk management strategies and the implementation of controls. -Support the training and strengthening of income tax knowledge within Suncor’s tax group and in other areas of the company to enhance awareness and understanding of relevant issues within the company. -Actively participate in the tax due diligence process with respect to potential acquisitions, mergers, joint ventures, and other material transactions. -Support the timely preparation and response to tax auditor queries where necessary. -Assist the business units in sound-decision making by providing relevant domestic and international tax and cross-border information and insight. -Participate in relevant industry and tax organizations in order to build contacts and relationships within the industry and profession, keep informed of new developments, represent Suncor and Suncor’s interests, etc. -Instrumental in the oversight of and input into the domestic and international governance process and cash management/repatriation processes. -Work with outside consulting firms on tax-related issues at times and effectively manage the work and the relationship. -Support the formulation of strategies in order to resolve tax issues with the various taxing authorities. -Work closely with external advisors and Suncor’s legal group, as well as others such as finance and business units specifically with respect to tax planning. -Monitor and, to the extent reasonable, positively influence the impacts to the company of international government tax policy pronouncements, including representation and involvement with government and industry tax groups. -Manage and coordinate project implementation of tax plans or the tax aspects of business transactions. -Responsible for providing domestic and international income tax planning advice to business units engaged in both domestic and non-Canadian or cross-border transactions.

What You Bring
-Undergraduate accounting or tax degree. -Proficient with Microsoft Office suite with strong working knowledge of Excel. -Strong understanding of international/cross-border tax issues such as mind and management/permanent establishment rules, treaty impact, non-resident withholding, etc. -Team player attitude with demonstrated ability to establish and effectively develop relations. -Project management skills and execution experience. -Solid understanding of cross-border issues, such as cash repatriation, mind and management requirements, permanent establishment issues, etc. -Ability to think and act strategically with foresight in situations of heightened risk, sensitivity or conflict with ability to make important decisions. -Should have at least 10-15 years of senior tax experience in the area of income tax compliance and planning at a public accounting firm or public upstream oil and gas Canadian multinational company. -Completed CICA in-depth tax courses, Advanced Tax courses and Oil & Gas Taxation courses. -A CPA, CA, CGA, or CMA designation is preferred. -Solid experience utilizing various income tax research tools, e.g. Taxnet Pro, CCH, etc. -Basic understanding of Canadian indirect taxes. -Problem solver utilizing critical thinking, good judgement. -Unquestioned integrity and seen as highly credible by those in other areas of the business, and by external tax professionals. -Thorough understanding of the Canadian Income Tax Act and Global Minimum Tax Act. -Strong tax technical knowledge is necessary with respect to due diligence, M&A, structuring and financing related tax issues such as streaming rules, attribute utilization, EIFEL and continuity provisions. -Advanced understanding of financial accounting (including both GAAP/IFRS) and tax accounting principles under IAS 12.
