Hydrologic & Hydraulic (H&H) Engineer

Zephyr Rail

The Role

Overview

Design and analyze drainage & hydraulic systems for rail infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

  • hydrologic modeling
  • stormwater design
  • drainage reports
  • client coordination
  • permit support
  • mentor juniors

Tasks

-Collaborate across disciplines—track/civil, structural, environmental—and interface with clients, Class I railroads, public agencies, and municipalities. -Conduct floodplain assessments and support FEMA submittals and USACE Section 404 permit applications. -Prepare drainage reports, technical memoranda, and plan sets in coordination with internal and external project teams. -Design stormwater systems, culverts, channel improvements, and erosion control measures for rail-related infrastructure including trackbed improvements, bridge approaches, and intermodal yard expansions. -May supervise junior engineers or CADD staff depending on project needs. -Perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses using tools such as HEC-RAS (1D/2D), HEC-HMS, HY-8, and CivilStorm. -Represent Zephyr Rail in coordination meetings, permitting discussions, and field visits as appropriate. -Emergency drainage assessments for failed culverts and bridge scour risks. -Contribute to high-profile rail projects that define the cutting-edge of North American rail infrastructure. -Support QA/QC efforts and mentor junior staff as needed.

What You Bring

-Hydraulic modeling and culvert design for LA Metro, Metrolink (SCRRA), CSX, UPRR and BNSF corridor improvements. -Stormwater management design for rail siding extensions and yard capacity upgrades. -Proficiency with H&H modeling tools and familiarity with MicroStation and/or AutoCAD. -Engineer-in-Training (EIT) required; Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred. -Drainage elements for Quiet Zone projects and at-grade crossing improvements. -A minimum of 5 years of H&H experience, with 7+ years of consecutive experience in Class I railroad, commuter rail, or light rail transit projects preferred. -Class I experience (e.g., UPRR, BNSF, NS, CSX) is most relevant and strongly favored. -Working knowledge of railroad drainage standards, FEMA guidelines, and relevant permitting processes. -Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering (or related field).

Benefits

-Flexible work environment with potential for hybrid/remote arrangements for qualified candidates. -Unparalleled health benefits and 401k programs.

The Company

About Zephyr Rail

-Carved a niche delivering railway engineering design—from feasibility studies and track alignment to at‑grade crossings and PS&E packages. -Provides full‑spectrum construction management services including contract administration, resident engineering, project controls and agency coordination. -Augments engineering and CM capabilities with a state‑of‑the‑art UAV fleet for aerial mapping, inspection, photogrammetry, 4K video and terrain modeling. -Awarded recent contracts such as LOSSAN’s Ortega Siding and Leesdale Siding Extension to expand track capacity and reliability in Southern California. -Typically works on light, commuter, freight and heavy rail corridor projects across California and beyond, often deploying drones to accelerate schedules. -Standout fact: one of the few firms FAA‑approved under Part 107 to operate UAVs in support of railroad engineering projects.
