Tasks

* Make and present funding requests and project status reports to the Executive and Board of Directors of BC Hydro. The Project Director will work with the Director, Dam Safety and Stations Asset Planning Director to understand the objectives and priorities of the projects in their portfolio and ensure that they are reflected in project plans and strategies. The Project Director will use their relationship management, negotiation and communication skills to achieve project objectives through interactions with consultants, contractors, stakeholders and First Nations. Stakeholder interactions include meeting with customers, the public and local officials. Where projects require regulatory approvals, interactions with regulators and regulator staff may be required in support of project teams. * Ensure that commercial, operational, permitting, regulatory and implementation risks are identified, analyzed, prioritized and communicated and that mitigation strategies are developed. Identifies risks associated with critical equipment/markets and develops mitigation strategies. * Remove barriers to project level issues and resolves escalations concerning project or resourcing issues. Encourage a “One Hydro” approach to teamwork by drawing on other’s successes and sharing best practices across BC Hydro. * Support project teams and lead high profile, sensitive and complex consultations and hearings with regulators, municipal and provincial government and crown corporations, interest groups, the public, First Nations, and other stakeholders on a variety of issues of significant importance to BC Hydro. Projects within this portfolio may navigate through uncertainty and variability in project conditions. The Project Director is expected to model resiliency, perseverance and agility in meeting these demands. * Supporting the 10 Year Portfolio Delivery Plan as well as the Project Delivery Business Plan, the Project Director is responsible for the successful overall planning and execution of major dam safety capital projects and program of projects and their effective communication with BC Hydro executives and key stakeholders. The Director provides oversight to ensure project readiness to move through the stages/phases of the project lifecycle and to determine strategic approaches to advancing the projects. * Champion safety and ensure that safety requirements are fully integrated into all aspects the work. * Clearly establish and communicate expectations and accountabilities to their team; monitor and evaluate performance; provide guidance on the PPM practice, project planning, supply chain strategies, problem-solving and work smart opportunities. * Provide team leadership by building relationships and collaborating with Planning, Stakeholder Engagement, Indigenous Relations, Engineering, Environment, Finance, Regulatory, Properties, Operations, Legal Counsel, and Safety. * Set the tone and drive the culture within the team, including taking calculated risks to seize opportunities, using diverse approaches, and implementing changes while maintaining a stable environment. * Develop succession plans for self and critical positions within the group, manage staff and consultant project manager resources with the appropriate skill level to deliver the projects in the capital plan for the portfolio, and provide development through training plans and stretch assignments for team members. * All candidate finalists will be required to provide their Stefan & Associates leadership assessment for review. * Keep abreast of best practices for large project execution, control and monitoring and champions innovation and process improvement * Develop contract strategies related to engineering, procurement and construction. Frequently represent BC Hydro as the Contract Owner on construction or equipment contracts. Support project teams to reduce BC Hydro’s exposure to contract claims and participate in contract and claim negotiations with suppliers and contractors. * Regularly meet as a management team (with colleagues) to discuss common issues, strategies, succession planning, development, lessons learned, workload, resourcing, recruitments, etc. to ensure a one-team approach and consistency across the portfolios, in leading people and delivering quality capital projects on time and on budget within Project Delivery. This will ensure we have all the necessary information to assess your application without any delays. * Ensures project teams have adequate strategies and plans for resourcing, procurement, regulatory, safety management, environmental management, First Nations and stakeholder engagement, and risk management. * Lead, coach and mentor a high performing team of program and project managers, develop succession plans for self and critical positions within the group and provide development through training plans and stretch assignments for team members. * Participate with Integrated Planning in the process for the annual and quarterly release of projects and ensure there are adequate internal and external project manager resources with the appropriate skill set to deliver projects.

What You Bring

* Required to travel regularly within BC. * 10 to 15 years related experience in areas of expertise preferably within an electric utility * Conversant with the planning, design, equipment/material procurement, construction and risk management processes required to deliver major critical infrastructure capital projects including dan seismic upgrade projects. * Proficient in ability to communicate effectively with people in a variety of positions i.e. Board Members, senior government staff, technical staff, trades people, and special interest groups. You must use a supported browser, such as Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome or Safari. Your pop up blocker will also need to be disabled for the BC Hydro Careers site. * Exceptional business acumen * Experience managing third party engineering service providers. * Project Management Certification or eligibility to obtain. * Proven experience fostering a culture of continuously improvement and innovation * Demonstrated experience as a business, project or technical manager/leader in an engineering, construction or major equipment supplier's organization. * A proven track record successfully leading and managing large, brown-field, critical infrastructure capital projects and dam safety capital projects involving multidisciplinary project teams and multiple stakeholders, ideally within a regulated environment. * Ability & desire to lead/coach/mentor project managers and senior technical staff. * A bachelor’s level degree or higher is required. Specialization in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Business Administration is preferred, however other degree disciplines may be considered. * Excellent writing and presentation skills. * Exceptional leadership, relationship building and collaboration skills. We are seeking an experienced, dynamic, and adaptable professional to join our team as a Project Director. The ideal candidate will excel in leading teams and safely delivering projects swiftly while maintaining high-quality standards, realize cost optimization and strengthen team resilience. This role involves working closely with internal and external stakeholders and First Nations, managing through uncertainty and variability, and leading a team through often urgent and challenging situations. * Exceptional skills and experience in mediation and difficult negotiations. * Proven experience in the ability to balance commercial decisions with engineering decisions. * Exceptional, proven leadership ability in managing, motivating and developing a high performing team. * Conversant with financial, accounting, marketing and general business management practices. * Capital intensive environment, with extensive project management knowledge, skills and experience. * Strong experience managing multi-million-dollar construction contracts .
