  • Acting as the lead engineer in bidding and delivering system analysis as part of the overall bidding package for HVDC, FACTS, energy storage, generator connection, control system tuning etc. Responsibilities include but not limited to defining the technical specification, preparing the bid package, evaluating bids and contract negotiations etc.
  • Lead/perform various power system studies to assess transmission capability of ATCO’s system and make recommendations on strategic system development.
  • Review/develop PSS/E and/or PSCAD models for transmission facilities to integrate into base cases and complete data submission to AESO.
  • Lead/perform steady state, transient and power quality analysis using PSS®E and/or PSCAD for the planning and integration of new loads, synchronous and asynchronous generators, energy storage systems and HVDC/FACTS devices to enable customer connections and ensure proper development of the transmission system.
  • Mentor/coach engineers, technologists, and other staff in the areas of advanced power system analysis.
  • Work with equipment vendor to develop, review and modify the PSSE/PSCAD models of HVDC, FACTS and generators for the purpose of planning studies and data submission.
  • Represent ATCO Electric as subject matter expert on external technical committees, working groups, panels and counsels as required.
  • Evaluate and recommend new technologies that will improve power system reliability, efficiency or costs. Support various innovation activities to improve power system performance.
  • Acting as the primary liaison between ATCO and AESO (or other local ISOs, government agencies) to ensure that relevant planning and operational requirements are met.
  • Acting as the owner’s engineer with contractors and vendors for various system studies and project support, including but not limited to developing scope of work, monitoring progress, performing quality control, and completing detailed reviews of contractor/vendor reports, results, data and assumptions etc.
  • Lead the collaborative work with the AESO, the market participant, and other stakeholders to develop connection strategies, mitigation plans, project scope and Functional Specification to connect customer and system projects to the Alberta Interconnected Electrical System (AIES).

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. Graduate degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and professionally in a dynamic environment while managing multiple demands and priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain relationships with customers.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in power system steady state and transient analysis related to load, generator, energy storage and HVDC/FACTS planning, integration, and commissioning.
  • Demonstrated capabilities of developing sound engineering judgement and decision-making.
  • Demonstrated business acumen.
  • In-depth knowledge and experience of modelling for synchronous and inverter-based generators, energy storage, HVDC, FACTS, and control systems etc.
  • Professional Engineer designation with APEGA.
  • A minimum of 7 years of related planning or operation experience in the electrical utility industry.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills. Proven troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proven experience and ability to define, scope, complete and develop solutions to ensure robust system planning.
