Design Engineer – Body-in-White (BIW) Automation

Abb

The Role

Overview

Design robotic automation systems for automotive body-in-white processes

Key Responsibilities

  • cad modelling
  • robotic automation
  • design review
  • customer interface
  • installation support
  • schedule management

Tasks

-Collaborate with simulation, controls, and manufacturing teams to ensure design feasibility, integration, and compliance with industry standards, safety norms, and customer specifications. -Create 3D models, 2D drawings, and documentation using CAD tools such as CATIA V5/V6, NX, or SolidWorks. -Design robotic automation systems for BIW processes including spot welding, arc welding, riveting, and material handling; develop robotic cells, EOAT (End-of-Arm Tooling), fixtures, and safety systems. -Support installation and commissioning teams during build, integration, and ramp-up phases; coordinate with vendors and suppliers for design, manufacturing, and bought-out components; manage design schedules, resource allocation, and customer approvals. -Conduct design reviews, DFMEAs, and risk assessments; interface with customers to understand technical requirements and present design concepts.

Requirements

  • cad
  • gd&t
  • industry 4.0
  • mechanical engineering
  • 6‑8 yrs
  • communication

What You Bring

-Proven expertise in designing BIW fixtures (spot-welding jigs, arc welding fixtures, roller hemming fixtures) and conducting concept design, weld studies, gun placement, layout, and cycle time analysis. -Familiarity with Industry 4.0 practices and global automotive OEM standards. -Solid understanding of GD&T, tolerance stack-up analysis, and manufacturing processes. -Excellent communication, project coordination skills, and willingness to travel for project execution and customer support. -Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical or Automotive Engineering. -6–8 years of experience in BIW robotic automation design, including fixture and tooling development. -Experience with digital manufacturing tools (e.g., Process Simulate, RobCAD) is an added advantage. -Strong proficiency in CAD software such as CATIA V5/V6, NX, or SolidWorks.
