The Role

Overview

Conduct routine and complex GC/MS analyses of environmental samples in lab and mobile settings.

Tasks

-Operate, maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments and equipment. -Prepare standards and reagents. -Interpret mass spectral data using libraries to elucidate compound structures. -Prepare samples using techniques such as dissolution, liquid-liquid extraction, separatory funnel extraction, Soxtherm extraction, and solid phase extraction. -Perform GC/MS analyses in mobile and fixed laboratory environments. -Prepare clear and concise reports based on analytical data. -Safely manage hazardous materials in a laboratory setting. -Develop and validate methods using GC with detectors including FID, PID, and MS. -Conduct analysis using EPA methods such as 8260, 8270, and TO series.

What You Bring

-Proven ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. -Minimum 10 years of analytical chemistry experience, including 5 years of hands-on instrument operation. -Proficient in Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, and Excel. -40-Hour HAZWOPER certification. -Ability to travel for up to two weeks at a time, potentially up to 25% annually. -Experience with vapor intrusion sampling using summa canisters and Tedlar bags. -Understanding hazardous waste characterization, storage, and labeling requirements. -Experience with Toxic Organic (TO) air methods and/or SW-846 methods for soil, water, and oil organic analyses. -Familiarity with the Incident Command System (ICS), especially ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800 courses (completion is a plus). -B.S. degree in Chemistry or a closely related scientific discipline with at least 30 hours of Chemistry coursework. -Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills. -Familiarity with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS). -General knowledge of organic chemistry fundamentals, chromatography, and mass spectrometry theory. -Proficiency in computer applications and ability to quickly learn new software. -Ability to prepare Site-Specific Quality Assurance Project Plans and Technical Reports. -Willingness to travel for field assignments, including mobile lab deployments. -Ability to work in PPE Levels D/C. -Highly organized, self-motivated, and capable of working independently with minimal supervision. -Strong working knowledge of EPA analytical methods and environmental regulations.
