Capacity Engineer, Senior Staff (data center, CFD)

Equinix

The Role

Overview

Lead CFD and mechanical design to solve data center cooling challenges.

Key Responsibilities

  • cfd modeling
  • pue calculations
  • autocad drafting
  • floor zoning
  • cage design
  • thermal solutions

Tasks

-Collaborates with various teams to identify any power/cooling issues that affect space capacity -Identifies and make corrections as necessary to match existing site conditions and update calculations as needed for upgraded or new equipment installations. -Provide solutions for more complex models that require in-depth review of the mechanical systems and controls -Creates standard Cage-Cabinet design options that respond to moderate customer requirements, Equinix requirements and physical site constraints -Develop datacenter floor zoning plans to ensure efficient infrastructure planning. -Ensures that AutoCAD drawings and capacity systems correctly represent existing status of the data center within a moderate scope -Subject matter expert to guide others internal and external to group. Assist team to perform reviews of models built by others and provide constructive feedback -Completes Power Utilization Effectiveness (PUE) calculations for facilities with input from Capacity Engineers and Site Operations -Works with more senior members in the validation and updating of data center infrastructure data within capacity systems -Review impact of containment walls and privacy screens on facility cooling system performance -Implement solutions to existing thermal management challenges -Creates CFD models in support of regular sales activities, project justifications, and for troubleshooting of thermal issues arising within our facilities -Uses developing skills to identify and understand underlying issues -Answers standard inventory-related questions from cross-functional departments -Assists Capacity Engineers with assessment of high-power density customer deployments -Works with site operations to address discrepancies with documentation of facility infrastructure and installation of customer cages within a moderate scope -Evaluate mechanical design plans and identify potential cooling limitations -Maximizes space utilization to develop the best design solution for the data center and the customer -Mentor and coach engineers within the HVAC/mechanical discipline -Works with Capacity and/or site engineers to identify power and cooling limitations, discuss potential modifications, and develop moderate solutioning -Acts as a backup point of contact for the capacity review process to ensure that the space being assigned maximizes the value of our data centers -Prepares notional Cage-Cabinet layouts, area calculations and diagrams for each individual standard data center within a moderate scope
