Tunnel Engineer

Aecom

The Role

Overview

Design and analyze tunnel lining systems for underground infrastructure projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • structural analysis
  • finite element
  • detailed design
  • material selection
  • quality review
  • client meetings

Tasks

-Ensure that all designs meet relevant codes, standards, and project requirements (e.g., Eurocodes, BS, ASTM, AASHTO, ITA guidelines). -Monitor the performance of tunnel linings during construction and recommend adjustments as needed. -Stay updated on the latest advancements in tunnel lining materials, methods, and technologies. -Specify reinforcement requirements, waterproofing systems, and joint details for tunnel linings. -Collaborate with geotechnical engineers to assess ground conditions and their impact on tunnel lining design. -Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including geotechnical engineers, structural engineers, and contractors, to ensure seamless integration of tunnel lining designs. -Select appropriate materials for tunnel linings, considering factors such as durability, load-bearing capacity, and environmental conditions. -Develop and implement innovative solutions to improve the performance and efficiency of tunnel lining systems. -Participate in design reviews, workshops, and client meetings to present design concepts and address technical queries. -Perform structural analysis to ensure the tunnel lining can withstand geotechnical loads, hydrostatic pressures, and operational stresses. -Conduct quality checks and peer reviews of design deliverables to maintain high standards of accuracy and reliability. -Optimize lining designs to achieve cost efficiency, durability, and compliance with project specifications and safety standards. -Develop detailed designs for tunnel linings, including segmental linings, shotcrete linings, and cast-in-place concrete linings. -Evaluate the effects of seismic loads, groundwater pressure, and other external forces on tunnel linings. -Conduct numerical modeling and finite element analysis (FEA) to simulate soil-structure interaction and assess the performance of lining systems. -Provide technical guidance during the construction phase, including reviewing shop drawings, resolving design-related issues, and ensuring compliance with design specifications.
