Assures work is performed in a safe and professional manner by following established safety, operating and emergency response procedures.
Performs field tests (chemical, physical and biological) in order to pace chemical dosages for process and odor control units or to alter unit processes.
Determines and directs remedial action in event of an emergency.
Performs minor maintenance including routine preventative maintenance, lubrication and minor adjustments; performs basic troubleshooting of equipment, recommends solutions and, where appropriate, fills out maintenance requests.
Provides on-the-job training for Operator I and Grade Operator positions in operations, maintenance and safety duties as required.
Operates vehicles for plant operational purposes.
Monitors and observes operating conditions, and records observation and data; diagnoses technical operational problems and takes corrective action; and communicates status, changes and abnormalities in operating areas.
Performs routing lab tests and routine instrument calibration for portable meters.
Assists in the development of process control and standard operating procedures; verifies and reports on corrective action taken against malfunctions, and variances abnormal operations conditions.
Operates equipment manually and through instrument panels, computer terminals and programmable logic control units.
Performs cleanup and housekeeping tasks for work areas, tools, equipment, facilities and grounds.
Samples wastewater, sludge and gases according to schedule, and services automatic samplers.
Prepares chemical solutions, and monitors process chemical supplies and recommends reorder.

Requires ability to diagnose plant-wide process problems and take remedial action, and to troubleshoot equipment.
Must demonstrate a working ability to use computer programs for process controls and reporting.
Must be able to lift and carry seventy-five (75) pounds in standing or bending positions, and carry while walking distances of ten (10) feet.
High School Diploma/GED is required.
Requires working in outside and inside environments with noise and all temperature and climatic conditions, and must be able to work under adverse weather conditions for extended periods of time.
Requires working knowledge of the methods, techniques, principles and practices of water/wastewater treatment, as acquired through five (5) years of experience.
Ability to perform tasks standing (25%) and walking (75%) for as many as five miles per shift.
Work positions include climbing stairs (60%), squatting and working with hands extended above head eighteen (18) inches (25%) and thirty (30) inches in front of body (10%).
Requires highest level water/wastewater treatment plant operator’s licenses as required by the site or ability to acquire within one year of appointment to Operator III.
Massachusetts Grade 6C Full Operators Certification (minimum).
