Design Lead - Water Networks & Growth

About the Role

The Water Division is experiencing significant growth, creating a Design Lead – Water Networks and Growth role within the Sydney West Region Delivery Team for Sydney Water. The role focuses on the design and delivery of network and growth projects, including upgrades, renewals and new greenfield infrastructure in Western Sydney. The Design Lead will provide technical expertise, lead diverse technical teams and ensure integrated, cost‑effective solutions are delivered on time and to quality standards. Based in the Sydney Olympic Park offices, the Design Lead is accountable for leading the Project Technical Team, coordinating multidisciplinary inputs, and working closely with the Project Manager and Technical Leads to deliver design deliverables within budget and program timelines. • Deliver outputs on time, within budget and obtain client endorsement. • Ensure technical outputs conform to scope, safety and quality standards, validated by independent review. • Manage scope changes using established processes. • Deliver designs to required quality standards using diverse teams. • Lead and manage multi‑disciplinary teams in a matrixed professional services environment. • Exercise independent judgment to resolve complex issues. • Act as internal subject‑matter expert, applying advanced practical and theoretical knowledge. • Work inclusively with client and stakeholders, presenting technical outcomes throughout the project lifecycle. • Plan technical delivery, confirming methodology, coordinating resources and tracking progress. • Execute technical delivery, leading production of deliverables, implementing review processes, and ensuring safety, innovation and sustainability. • Monitor and report on schedule, budget, quality, resources and scope; propose corrective actions. • Coordinate quality reviews, schedules and modifications with Design Quality teams and discipline reviewers.

What You Bring

• Engineering degree with 8+ years experience in an engineering consultancy. • Demonstrated leadership managing subcontractors and multi‑disciplinary teams. • Knowledge of water and wastewater assets and delivery environments. • Strong problem‑solving and negotiation skills for dispute resolution. • Understanding of D&C or alternative delivery project models. • Excellent report writing with storytelling ability. • Proficiency in project management tools such as MS Project and Power BI. • Desirable experience working with Sydney Water. • Highly developed interpersonal and consulting skills to build positive client relationships.
