Principal Engineer – Data and AI
Lead data architecture, reporting, and AI strategy for power grid planning platform
Job Highlights
About the Role
The Principal Engineer – Data & AI will own the end‑to‑end data strategy for the PlanOS planning platform, supporting long‑term transmission and generation planning, capacity expansion, reliability assessment, and scenario analysis. Responsibilities include designing robust, auditable, and reproducible data models, ensuring scalable execution of large multi‑scenario studies, and leading the responsible adoption of AI to enhance insight, explainability, and decision‑making in regulated environments. Key responsibilities encompass owning the data architecture and reporting strategy, designing and governing schemas for inputs, intermediate results, and outputs, and guaranteeing versioning, lineage, and reproducibility. The role also optimizes storage and access patterns for extensive multi‑scenario studies, translates planning results into dashboards and interactive tools, identifies AI/ML use cases, and ensures those methods are traceable and appropriate for regulated contexts. Additionally, the engineer partners with engineering teams to integrate data and AI workflows, acts as a technical bridge to power system experts and customers, and oversees data governance, quality assurance, and validation. • Own end‑to‑end data architecture and reporting strategy for the PlanOS platform. • Design and govern scalable, auditable data models, schemas, versioning, and lineage. • Optimize storage and access for large multi‑scenario, multi‑year planning studies. • Translate complex planning outputs into dashboards, narratives, and interactive tools. • Identify, lead, and ensure explainable AI/ML use cases for regulated grid planning. • Partner with engineering teams to integrate data and AI workflows into production software. • Drive data governance, quality assurance, and validation across the platform. • Provide technical leadership across teams without direct authority.

What You Bring
GE Vernova's Consulting Services is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to lead the Data, Reporting, and AI Strategy for its long‑term power grid planning software platform. The role drives data strategy and AI‑enabled capabilities to improve planning efficiency, insight generation, and explainability, while requiring hands‑on leadership and a focus on implementing highly scalable systems. Collaboration with power system experts and software engineers is essential to translate complex planning outputs into reliable data sets and reporting capabilities. Required qualifications include a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Data Engineering, or a related field, and at least 10 years of experience in data engineering, data architecture, or platform engineering. Strong hands‑on expertise with Python and SQL, proven ability to design robust data models for complex platforms, experience with large‑scale analytical or simulation systems, and demonstrated technical leadership across teams without direct authority are essential. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are also required. Desired characteristics comprise experience with grid planning or energy market tools (e.g., PSLF, PlanOS), familiarity with optimization frameworks such as Pyomo, CVXPY, OR‑Tools, Gurobi, or CPLEX, and expertise in designing enterprise‑grade APIs and persistence layers using ORM tools like SQLAlchemy and service frameworks such as Pyramid. Hands‑on experience with cloud‑based data platforms (AWS or Azure), data lakes, and distributed compute, as well as a background in data versioning, lineage, and auditability for regulated environments, are valued. Practical AI/ML production experience with a focus on explainability and governance, a systems‑thinking mindset, and a passion for building trusted, high‑impact software for critical infrastructure are also important. Business acumen expectations include initiative to explore alternative technologies, strong problem‑breaking and documentation skills, awareness of competitors and industry trends, and the ability to analyze the impact of technology choices. • 10+ years experience in data engineering/architecture with strong Python and SQL skills. • Experience with large‑scale analytical, simulation, or optimization‑driven systems. • Familiarity with grid planning tools (e.g., PSLF, PlanOS) and optimization frameworks (Pyomo, Gurobi, CPLEX). • Expertise in enterprise‑grade APIs, ORM (SQLAlchemy), and service frameworks (Pyramid). • Hands‑on experience with cloud data platforms (AWS or Azure) and data lakes. • Proven ability to introduce AI/ML into production with focus on explainability and governance.
