About the Role

Highways Maintenance Operatives are essential for maintaining safe and efficient roads, reducing accidents, and ensuring smooth traffic flow. Their work minimises vehicle emissions, prevents flooding, and keeps roads clear during winter. Litter picking also enhances the environment and public spaces. In this role you will be involved in routine and cyclic maintenance, minor civils work, litter picking, and winter emergency call‑outs and standby duties. The position requires carrying out a variety of highway maintenance tasks, operating HGVs and small plant machinery, and participating in both winter and summer standby duties. Safety is a top priority and accurate record‑keeping, paperwork and communication with Amey staff, sub‑contractors, emergency services and customers are essential. The role supports the overall goal of keeping the road network safe and functional. • Perform carriageway and footway patching, kerbing, ironwork replacement, and drainage maintenance. • Operate and maintain HGVs and small plant machinery, completing checks and routine maintenance. • Participate in winter and summer standby duties, including emergency call‑outs. • Ensure personal and team safety in all activities. • Keep accurate records, complete paperwork, and liaise with Amey staff, sub‑contractors, emergency services, police, clients, and customers.

What You Bring

Candidates should have experience in roads or street works and hold a full UK driving licence; an HGV licence is preferred but not essential. An awareness of health and safety regulations and the ability to work self‑motivated and collaboratively within a team are required.
