About the Role
Laboratory safety and compliance duties include assisting the lab manager with supervision of all lab activities, promoting a safety culture, ensuring proper PPE use, delivering required safety training, overseeing equipment calibration and maintenance, and adhering to corporate and office-specific Quality Management System policies. The role also ensures team members maintain relevant laboratory certifications and keeps the lab organized and clean to meet accreditation requirements from DOT, AMRL, CCRL, and AASHTO. The assistant manager oversees routine soils testing such as Atterberg limits, gradation analyses, swell testing, moisture content, unconfined compressive strength, and standard and modified Proctor testing, while beginning to learn visual soil classification. They also supervise concrete testing, including labeling and setting samples for curing, monitoring temperature logs, and breaking samples. Data collection responsibilities involve interpreting test data and preparing reports or summaries as requested by lab technicians. Communication tasks include mentoring and training staff, coordinating work schedules, assisting project and department managers, collaborating on staffing with recruiting and supervisors, and participating in business development, marketing, and client development. ECS supports career development by encouraging continued participation in internal and external training programs and certifications from organizations such as ACI, ASNT, AWS, ICC, NICET, NRCA, RCI, various State DOTs, and WACEL. • Supervise laboratory testing of construction materials and ensure quality control. • Promote safety culture, enforce PPE use, and manage equipment calibration and maintenance. • Oversee routine soils tests (e.g., Atterberg limits, gradation, moisture) and concrete tests (sample labeling, curing, temperature monitoring, sample breaking). • Interpret test data, prepare reports, and provide summaries for technicians and managers. • Mentor and train lab staff, coordinate work schedules, and assist with staffing and recruitment. • Participate in business development, marketing, and client outreach activities. • Maintain laboratory certifications and compliance with QMS and accreditation standards (DOT, AMRL, CCRL, AASHTO).

What You Bring
Required qualifications are a high school diploma or GED, three or more years of related experience, basic concrete and/or soils lab certifications, the ability to lift 60‑80 pounds, strong communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with peers, supervisors, and clients. Candidates should have a solid understanding of construction materials laboratory equipment, ASTM testing standards, data interpretation, and Quality Management Systems, with knowledge of ECS systems considered a plus. The pay range is $20‑$30 per hour, with final compensation based on location and individual qualifications. • Meet required qualifications: high school diploma/GED, 3+ years experience, basic concrete/soil lab certifications, ability to lift 60‑80 lb, strong communication, knowledge of ASTM standards and QMS.
