About the Role
Key duties include setting up compressor packages for testing, operating appropriate meters and test equipment, and accurately recording and entering test data. The technician uses wiring, piping, and instrumentation diagrams to assemble, modify, or fabricate machines and components, and communicates progress with engineering. Additional responsibilities involve troubleshooting, recommending solutions, maintaining and calibrating test instruments, and testing finished products for quality. • Set up and test compressor packages using meters and test equipment, recording data accurately. • Assemble, modify, and fabricate machines and components using wiring, piping, and instrumentation diagrams. • Communicate project status with engineering and provide input on procedures, tools, and equipment. • Troubleshoot issues, recommend solutions, and maintain/calibrate test instruments. • Identify design improvements to enhance production efficiency and material utilization. • Test finished products for quality assurance. • Perform tasks with minimal supervision and serve as a resource for colleagues. • Ensure compliance with safety rules, Hitachi’s Code of Ethics, and company policies.

What You Bring
The R&D Engineering Technician reports to the R&D Engineering Manager at Hitachi Global Air Power in Michigan City, Indiana. The role supports the R&D team by building prototypes, conducting validation testing for new and improved Sullair products, and managing related projects. The technician must thrive in a fast‑paced environment, handle multiple projects, and meet program timelines. Applicants should have an AS or BS in Electrical Engineering Technology (or equivalent) and at least ten years of relevant experience, including five years of technical or skilled‑trade work. Required knowledge includes compressor systems, electric motors, variable‑speed drives, hydraulics, pneumatic and electrical controls, and the ability to read wiring and system flow diagrams. Experience with rotating equipment, data‑acquisition systems, and proficiency in Microsoft Office (programming skills a plus) is also desired. The ideal candidate is highly motivated, hands‑on, and detail‑oriented, with strong organizational and troubleshooting abilities. They must be flexible, results‑oriented, a self‑starter, and able to work with minimal supervision while collaborating effectively with others.
