About the Role
ERM is hiring a Protected Species Observer (PSO) Support for an offshore voyage departing from Boston, MA. The role involves observing, recording, and reporting wildlife on a medium or large vessel while alternating shifts with an ERM PSO. This is a full‑time, limited‑term position lasting seven months and requires strict adherence to regulatory, health, and safety protocols. Key duties include standing on deck to detect protected species, documenting their behavior and interactions, assisting with data collection, and ensuring that all crew follow safe water vessel practices and comply with NOAA, NMFS, and USFWS regulations to protect marine biodiversity. • Detect and record protected species from deck during alternating 12‑hour shifts. • Document species behavior, interactions, and assist with data collection for NMFS/USFWS exclusion zones. • Ensure crew adherence to safe‑water vessel practices and compliance with NOAA, NMFS, and USFWS regulations.

What You Bring
Ideal candidates will hold a Bachelor of Science in a related field, be current with BOSIET certification (or obtain it before the start date), possess NMFS PSO approval, and have at least three years of experience as a PSO or Marine Mammal Observer. They must demonstrate strong knowledge of the Endangered Species Act and Marine Mammal Protection Act, excellent observational, communication, and computer skills, and be able to work 12‑hour shifts seven days a week in challenging sea conditions while handling physical tasks such as climbing ladders and lifting up to 50 lb. • Hold a BS in a related field, current BOSIET certification, and NMFS PSO approval. • Minimum three years experience as a Protected Species Observer or Marine Mammal Observer. • Strong knowledge of the ESA and MMPA, with excellent observational, communication, and basic computer skills. • Ability to work 12‑hour days, seven days a week on rough seas, climb ladders, and lift up to 50 lb.
