About the Role

The primary function is to apply, remove, and repair insulation on equipment, piping, ductwork, heat exchangers, storage tanks, and vessels to control noise and maintain temperature. Work includes reading blueprints, selecting appropriate insulation materials, preparing surfaces, cutting and fitting insulation, and securing it with various covers, sealants, and fasteners. • Read and interpret blueprints, instructions, and documentation to plan work activities. • Select and quantify insulation materials (fiberglass, foam rubber, Styrofoam, cork, urethane) based on heat retention, location, and equipment use. • Transport materials and set up work sites safely. • Cut, shape, and install insulation on pipes, ducts, and equipment using hand tools. • Apply sealants, tapes, plastic covers, canvas strips, or asphalt mastic to finish insulated surfaces and seal access holes. • Install protective sheet metal around insulated pipes with screws. • Prepare surfaces with adhesives, cement, or metal pins prior to insulation application. • Follow hazardous waste handling procedures and safely remove or seal asbestos insulation when required. • Complete records, maintain tools, perform cleanup, and ensure housekeeping standards. • Observe and comply with all safety rules, wearing required personal protective equipment. • Visualize three‑dimensional objects from plans and drawings.

What You Bring

The Journeyman Insulation Technician role requires at least three years of documented field experience in the chosen craft discipline. Candidates must be able to read and interpret instructions, plan work activities, and perform tasks independently. The position may involve additional responsibilities such as installing protective sheet metal, handling hazardous waste, safely removing asbestos insulation, maintaining tools and records, and adhering to all safety and project regulations. Certifications such as NCCER Journeyman or Leadman are preferred, and a high‑school diploma or equivalent with relevant experience is required. • Perform basic shop mathematics and make decisions based on measurable criteria. • Work at heights and handle frequent climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, and reaching tasks. • Lift and carry up to 50 lb; stand, walk, and sit for extended periods. • May hold NCCER Journeyman or Leadman certification; high school diploma or equivalent required.
