About the Role
The Sr. Controls Technician performs preventive maintenance, repairs, installations, commissioning, and detailed troubleshooting of HVAC control systems while ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction. In this role, the technician mentors control, service, and mechanical technicians on building automation activities and completes all required project and service documentation. Technical duties include diagnosing and repairing complex control system malfunctions, writing software modifications in multiple languages, and providing field proposals for retrofits, upgrades, and enhancements. The technician also assists sales by offering technical recommendations and manages work assignments to meet timelines and customer expectations. Safety leadership is a core responsibility, with the technician delivering safety instruction to branch technicians, ensuring compliance with Johnson Controls and customer standards, and training customers on system operation. Documentation tasks involve compiling certificates of completion, training forms, punch lists, and maintaining technical proficiency through self‑study and required certifications. Project support activities encompass designing and configuring building control systems, creating flow diagrams, sequences of operation, bill of materials, network layouts, and electrical schematics. The technician assists with material ordering, factory‑mounting coordination, loading and commissioning controllers, and providing as‑built documentation and training for owners/operators. • Conduct preventive maintenance, repair, installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting of HVAC control systems. • Provide high-level on‑site customer service and act as a trusted advisor. • Mentor and train control, service, and mechanical technicians. • Complete project and service documentation, including manuals and certification forms. • Diagnose and repair complex control system malfunctions; write software modifications. • Prepare field proposals for retrofits, upgrades, and enhancements; assist sales with technical recommendations. • Manage work assignments to ensure timely execution and customer satisfaction. • Ensure compliance with Johnson Controls and customer safety standards; provide safety leadership. • Train customers on control system operation and deliver required documentation. • Assist in design, configuration, and testing of building automation systems; create schematics and flow diagrams. • Coordinate material ordering, delivery, and installation; manage factory‑mounting processes. • Support commissioning, validation of system functionality, and as‑built documentation. • Identify upselling opportunities and provide quotes for recommendations.

What You Bring
Candidates must have at least four years of commercial controls troubleshooting experience in the HVAC industry, a vocational school or associate degree in a technical field, or two years of relevant experience. Strong communication skills, the ability to explain technical concepts to diverse audiences, and knowledge of control theory and building automation systems are essential. • Minimum 4 years commercial controls troubleshooting experience in HVAC industry. • Vocational school graduate, associate degree, or 2 years experience in electronic/mechanical systems. • Strong communication skills; able to explain technical information to technical and non‑technical audiences. • Knowledge of control theory, building automation, and related subsystems. • Effective writing skills for reports and software documentation.
