About the Role
Apply, remove, and repair insulation on industrial equipment, pipes, ductwork, or other mechanical systems such as heat exchangers, hot and cold pipes, storage tanks and vessels, to help control noise and maintain temperatures. • Interpret blueprints, instructions, and documentation to plan work. • Select appropriate insulation material (fiberglass, foam, Styrofoam, cork, urethane) based on heat retention, location, surface, shape, and equipment use. • Transport materials and equipment to the site and set up the work area. • Cover, seal, or finish insulated surfaces and access holes with plastic covers, canvas strips, sealants, tape, cement, or asphalt mastic. • Fit insulation around obstructions and shape materials as needed. • Install protective sheet metal around insulated pipes with screws. • Measure and cut insulation using tape measures, handsaws, knives, and scissors. • Prepare surfaces by applying adhesives, cement, or asphalt, or attaching metal pins. • Secure insulation with preformed plastic covers, canvas strips, sealant, or tape using staple gun, trowel, paintbrush, or caulking gun. • Follow all hazardous waste handling guidelines. • Remove or seal old asbestos insulation following safety procedures. • Complete records, maintain tools/equipment, and perform cleanup and housekeeping. • Observe and comply with safety and project rules, wear required PPE, and perform other duties as required. • Apply shop mathematics to solve problems. • Plan work and select proper tools. • Compare sizes, shapes, and forms of lines, figures, and objects. • Visualize objects in three dimensions from plans and drawings. • Make decisions based on measurable criteria.
