About the Role
This is a critical leadership role focused on coaching and influencing operational leaders, strengthening critical risk controls, driving insights through performance reporting, and ensuring consistent application of The Downer Standard. You’ll also lead the rhythm of governance – audits, risk tools, investigations and improvement, and develop a high‑performing H&S team. • Lead a business partnering model where operations own safety, coaching and mentoring safety teams. • Coach and influence operational leaders to strengthen critical risk controls. • Drive performance reporting, trend analysis and insights to inform timely interventions. • Ensure consistent application of The Downer Standard and lead governance activities including audits, risk tools, investigations and continuous improvement. • Build and develop a high‑performing health & safety team.

What You Bring
ABOUT YOU: We’re looking for someone who is a credible, visible leader able to influence outcomes through relationships and collaboration. They are data‑driven and decisive, translating trends into timely interventions, and act as a practical change agent who lifts maturity and builds leaders who own safety. They remain calm under pressure, are values‑driven, and can challenge constructively. What you’ll bring includes a Diploma/Advanced Diploma in WHS (or Cert IV with willingness to complete a Diploma). You have at least 5 years HSE experience in high‑risk industries and 2 years leading high‑performing teams. You possess strong critical risk capability, investigation leadership (ICAM), audit leadership, and solid reporting, trending, and analysis skills (Power BI beneficial). Experience in injury management/ workers’ compensation and a current driver’s licence are also required. • Lift health & safety capability and embed practical, sustainable approaches across the business. • Hold a Diploma/Advanced Diploma in WHS (or Cert IV with intent to complete a Diploma). • Possess at least 5 years HSE experience in high‑risk industries, preferably construction/infrastructure. • Have minimum 2 years leadership experience managing high‑performing teams. • Demonstrate strong critical risk capability and investigation leadership (ICAM or lead investigator). • Experience leading internal audits, corrective actions and preparing for external audits. • Strong reporting, trending and analysis skills, with Power BI proficiency desirable. • Experience in injury management and workers’ compensation. • Hold a current, valid driver’s licence.
