Environmental Technician (Landfill Gas)

About the Role
This position reports to the Gas Operations Manager and is responsible for operating and maintaining landfill gas collection and control systems (GCCS). The GCCS includes extraction wells, interconnected piping, conveyance equipment such as fans or blowers, and a flare for combusting collected gas. Proper operation ensures compliance with state and federal environmental regulations. Key duties include operating the GCCS efficiently, calibrating and maintaining electronic data collection devices, managing data from wellfield extraction and environmental monitoring sites, and implementing a preventative maintenance plan. The role also involves operating liquid management system pumps, performing wellfield valve and vacuum adjustments, maintaining PVC or HDPE piping, completing WM Landfill Gas Technician I training, and adhering to health and safety procedures while being on‑call for malfunctions. • Operate and maintain landfill gas collection and control systems (GCCS) to meet regulatory standards. • Calibrate and manage electronic data collection devices for optimized LFG extraction. • Collect, enter, and interpret data from wellfield extraction and environmental monitoring points. • Execute the GCCS preventative maintenance plan, including valve and vacuum adjustments. • Operate and troubleshoot liquid management system pumps and monitor liquid levels. • Perform maintenance on PVC and HDPE piping and related equipment. • Follow all health and safety protocols and be on‑call for GCCS malfunction response.

What You Bring
Required qualifications are a valid unrestricted driver’s license. Preferred candidates have hands‑on experience in environmental fieldwork, construction, electrical or mechanical settings, knowledge of gas collection systems, pumps, blowers, and flare operations, and technical or trade school training in related fields. Experience with PVC/HDPE piping, data logging systems, mechanical troubleshooting, basic computer data entry, and the ability to work independently are also valued. The role demands physical ability to work both inside the gas plant and outdoors in inclement weather, heat, and humidity. Reasonable accommodations may be provided to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. • Complete WM Landfill Gas Technician I Training and stay current on environmental regulations. • Hold a valid, unrestricted driver’s license. • Demonstrated experience in environmental fieldwork, construction, electrical, or mechanical hands‑on roles. • Knowledge of gas collection systems, pumps, blowers, and flare operations. • Technical or trade school training in environmental science, mechanical systems, or instrumentation. • Experience working with PVC/HDPE piping components. • Proficiency with data logging systems and basic computer data entry. • Mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting pumps, motors, and pneumatic equipment. • Ability to work independently in field environments with minimal supervision. • Physical capability to work inside gas plants and outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
