About the Role
The Leadman provides leadership, instruction, and guidance to other craft workers on a work crew, assisting the foreman while functioning as a journeyman. This role is also known by alternate titles such as crane rigger, hook tender, slinger, and yard rigger. The primary purpose is to assemble rigging to lift and move equipment or material for construction projects. The Leadman is responsible for loading, transporting, and unloading materials, selecting appropriate cables, ropes, pulleys, winches, blocks, and sheaves based on load specifications. They attach rigging components to overhead structures, secure loads to crane hooks, and direct crane operators or hoisting engineers using hand signals and communications equipment. Additional duties include setting up braces, tying knots, assembling and disassembling cranes, splicing ropes and cables, overseeing hoisting personnel, performing minor maintenance, and ensuring compliance with all safety rules. • Load, transport, unload and assist in selecting cables, ropes, pulleys, winches, blocks and sheaves based on load weight and size • Attach pulleys and blocks to fixed overhead structures using bolts and clamps • Secure loads with loops, wires, ropes, or chains to the crane hook • Direct crane operator or hoisting engineer using hand signals, loudspeaker, radio or telephone to ensure safety • Set up braces and rig hoisting equipment with hand tools and power wrenches • Tie various knots as required • Assemble and disassemble cranes • Splice rope and wire cables to create or repair slings or tackle • Direct workers hoisting machinery onto or off ships, railroads, trucks or cars • Perform minor maintenance and cleaning of tools and equipment • Observe all safety rules and perform other duties as required

What You Bring
Applicants should possess at least a high school diploma or equivalent combined with relevant experience. The job requires the ability to coordinate movements using visual signals, apply shop mathematics, read and interpret drawings, and select proper tools while working within precise accuracy standards. Employees work under immediate supervision, follow established guidelines, and typically do not exercise independent judgment. Physical demands include standing (70% of the time), walking (30%), and occasional lifting of up to 50 lb, carrying 40 lb, and applying forces of up to 70 ft‑lb when pushing or pulling. The role also involves frequent climbing, balancing, and occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, and fingering activities.
