About the Role

The role of Principal Transport Planner in Newcastle is a senior technical position responsible for leading the development and delivery of transport planning projects. It blends technical expertise, project management, and client engagement to create innovative, sustainable transport solutions while mentoring junior team members and contributing to practice growth. • Lead detailed transport scheme analysis and provide forecasts to inform design and investment decisions. • Prepare economic appraisals and business cases complying with DfT and HM Treasury guidance. • Act as trusted adviser to regional and national clients, representing AECOM at senior meetings and workshops. • Identify business development opportunities, lead bid proposals, and collaborate on multidisciplinary commissions. • Mentor colleagues, support staff development, and contribute to succession planning within the Newcastle office.

What You Bring

The ideal candidate brings extensive experience in quantitative assessment of transport schemes, economic appraisal, and business case preparation. They should be self‑motivated, capable of leading multidisciplinary teams, and skilled at identifying and winning new work across areas such as scheme appraisal, traffic data analysis, strategy development, and monitoring. • Extensive transport planning experience with a degree in Transport Planning, Geography, Civil Engineering, Economics, or related field. • Chartered status or membership in a relevant professional body (e.g., CIHT, TPS, ICE). • Proven expertise in economic appraisal, business case development, and delivering to DfT/Treasury standards. • Advanced analytical skills using industry‑standard tools for network performance assessment and scenario testing. • Strong communication and stakeholder management abilities, with confidence presenting at senior level. • Track record of successful business development and client relationship management.
