Job Highlights
About the Role
The Designated Driver Trainer (DDT) is a dual‑role position that operates a waste‑management vehicle on an assigned route while also serving as a trainer for new drivers. The DDT ensures continuous daily operations and plays a critical role in onboarding and developing drivers to operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company and regulatory standards. The trainer observes and evaluates new drivers, focusing on safe driving habits, defensive techniques, and procedural adherence, and provides coaching to drivers with safety performance issues. The DDT conducts on‑the‑job training and coaching on vehicle operation, defensive driving, and OBU tablet usage for new hires and drivers reassigned to new routes, and provides immediate feedback after observing driver performance. Accurate records of driver progress are maintained, and performance data are reported to the Route Manager and Onboarding Optimization Manager, with recommendations for additional coaching as needed. The role also involves mentoring drivers, helping them build confidence and skills, and acting as an ambassador for WM by promoting the company’s values and safety standards. The DDT supports drivers in transitioning into their roles and ensures high performance and compliance expectations are upheld. • Operate WM vehicles safely, perform pre‑ and post‑trip inspections, and complete waste/recycling collection. • Conduct on‑the‑job training and coaching for new and reassigned drivers on vehicle operation, defensive driving, and OBU tablet usage. • Observe driver performance, give immediate constructive feedback, and mentor drivers to develop confidence and skills. • Maintain accurate records of driver progress and report performance data to management with coaching recommendations. • Promote WM’s safety standards and company values as an ambassador.
