About the Role

Key responsibilities include safely operating the assigned WM vehicle in accordance with WM Safety, OSHA, DOT and all local, state, and federal regulations, and performing standard driver duties such as pre‑ and post‑trip inspections. The DDT conducts on‑the‑job training and coaching on vehicle operation, defensive driving, WM Way processes, and OBU tablet usage for new hires and drivers reassigned to new routes. They observe drivers, deliver immediate constructive feedback, keep accurate progress records, and report performance data to the Route Manager and Onboarding Optimization Manager. Additionally, the DDT mentors drivers, promotes WM’s values, and acts as an ambassador for safety and compliance. • Operate assigned WM vehicle safely while complying with WM Safety, OSHA, DOT, and all applicable laws. • Provide on‑the‑job driver training, coaching defensive driving, WM Way processes, and OBU tablet usage. • Observe and evaluate new and reassigned drivers, delivering immediate constructive feedback. • Maintain detailed driver progress records and report performance data to management. • Mentor drivers to build confidence and promote WM’s safety culture. • Perform physically demanding tasks (standing, walking, lifting, etc.) in garage and outdoor environments.

The Designated Driver Trainer (DDT) is a dual‑role position that combines regular route operation with on‑demand driver training. The DDT ensures continuity of daily waste‑collection operations while supporting the onboarding and ongoing development of new drivers. This role focuses on safe, efficient vehicle operation and compliance with company and regulatory standards, as well as mentoring drivers to improve safety performance. Required qualifications are a High School diploma or GED, at least two years of experience operating a WM vehicle that requires a CDL, and a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with an air‑brake endorsement. Preferred qualifications include up to seven years of recent equivalent military driving experience and two years of experience supervising, training, or coaching personnel. • Required: High School/GED, 2 years WM vehicle operation, Class A/B CDL with air‑brake endorsement. • Preferred: Recent military driving experience and 2 years supervising or coaching personnel.
