About the Role
Principals are responsible for achieving overall quality and performance goals, delegating tasks to Senior Project Managers, and stepping in where highest value can be added. They act as problem solvers and final reviewers, embodying a positive customer‑service attitude and ECS core values. The role focuses on pursuing and executing geotechnical projects in the transportation sector—highways, bridges, and rail—across the Northern Mid‑Atlantic region. It includes providing technical expertise, hosting client and internal meetings, mentoring Associate Principals, and participating in the review committee for Associate Principal designations. At the office and regional level, the Principal oversees projects, reviews technical reports, prepares and evaluates proposals, assists with department management and profit‑and‑loss oversight, and supports business development by cultivating client interactions and marketing services. Additional department‑specific duties involve weekly client engagement, community involvement, training and mentorship, final technical sign‑offs, proactive project management using ALF, conducting weekly meetings with Senior Project Managers, promoting safety, and handling contract and proposal approvals as per signature authority. • Lead geotechnical projects in transportation (highway, bridge, rail) across the Northern Mid‑Atlantic. • Provide technical expertise, mentor Associate Principals, and serve on the Associate Principal review committee. • Oversee project delivery, conduct technical report reviews, and approve proposals and contracts. • Drive business development, maintain client relationships, and represent ECS at industry events. • Manage department P&L, assist hiring decisions, and conduct performance evaluations. • Ensure safety compliance and promote ECS safety culture. • Participate in weekly meetings with Senior Project Managers and department managers. • Provide final technical sign‑off and act as a backstop for project deliverables.

What You Bring
Candidates must have at least 12 years of related experience, an Associate Principal designation (or Board of Directors exception), a BS/MS in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geology or a related field, and a PE or PG license in the states of operation. They should demonstrate technical excellence, leadership, business development success, proficiency with geotechnical software, and strong relationships with transportation agencies in Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. • Minimum 12 years of relevant experience and Associate Principal designation. • Bachelor’s/Master’s in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geology or related field; PE or PG license in relevant states. • Proficient with geotechnical software for slope and foundation analysis. • Strong network within transportation agencies of MD, WV, PA, and NJ.
