About the Role
Join our Downer Professional Services team and play a key role in delivering complex defence and national security projects that safeguard Australia’s future. Our work supports the nation’s strategic interests and ensures readiness against emerging threats. • Translate strategic guidance (e.g., National Defence Strategy, Concept Aspire) into actionable mission designs. • Develop Functional, Logical, and Physical Mission Designs. • Produce and maintain Joint Mission Design artefacts such as mission characterisation, threat baselines, FFBDs, capability needs hierarchies, interdependencies, allocated baselines, and gap analyses. • Collaborate with capability managers, strategic planners, and stakeholders to gather input for mission design. • Support digitisation of design artefacts into a CATIA‑based Joint Force Model. • Apply military judgement to assess feasibility, interoperability, and operational effectiveness of mission packages.

What You Bring
We are seeking a Joint Mission Design Specialist with a Defence background to join our Canberra office and contribute to Mission Engineering projects. The role will involve translating strategic guidance into actionable mission designs and collaborating with a range of stakeholders. • Experience in military operational planning and the Joint Military Appreciation Process (JMAP). • Domain expertise in one or more operational environments (Air, Land, Maritime, Space, Cyber). • Proven ability to translate strategic intent into operational plans across Defence interagency environments. • Strong analytical skills in systems thinking, capability development, or strategic planning; familiarity with systems engineering or mission engineering desirable. • Knowledge of mission engineering principles, system‑of‑systems behavioural analysis, and experience with MBSE tools (e.g., CATIA, Cameo). • Understanding of ODCS processes and interoperability risks of Defence capabilities. • Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams with strong written and verbal communication. • Current Negative Vetting Level 1 clearance (and possible ITAR compliance). • Meaningful work delivering critical Defence projects that protect Australia.
