About the Role
Key responsibilities include developing an understanding of permits for landfill sites and related facilities, procuring and directing consulting firms for regulatory documents, and reviewing those documents for efficiency, compliance, safety, and cost savings. You will assist senior waste management engineers on construction projects, manage contract administration, material ordering, contractor scheduling, and quality oversight, and work with operations teams to ensure permit compliance and resolve issues. Additional duties involve preparing and reviewing engineering, monitoring, and environmental reports, conducting environmental reviews and audits, collaborating with landfill managers on short‑ and long‑term goals, estimating site capital needs for budgeting, interacting with state and local agencies, implementing best management practices, providing technical support across functional areas, and pursuing continuing education to integrate new technologies. • Develop expertise in permits governing landfill construction, waste transfer stations, collection operations, and material recovery facilities. • Procure and manage consulting firms for regulatory documents, ensuring compliance, efficiency, and cost savings. • Assist senior waste management engineers on construction projects, handling contract administration, material ordering, contractor scheduling, and CQA oversight. • Collaborate with operations teams to maintain permit compliance and resolve operational issues. • Prepare and review engineering, monitoring, and environmental reports. • Conduct environmental reviews and audits. • Partner with landfill managers to set short‑term and long‑term goals aligned with WM objectives. • Identify and estimate site capital needs for inclusion in annual budget planning. • Interact with state and local agencies to foster positive relationships and ensure regulatory compliance. • Implement WM engineering directives and Best Management Practices at assigned sites. • Provide technical support to operations, sales, landfill managers, and environmental staff. • Engage in continuing education to integrate new technologies and innovations.

Under mentorship from experienced staff, you will apply your education and experience to waste management assignments, expanding your knowledge of landfill operations, regulatory permitting, construction, and environmental management systems. The role is diverse, involving project planning, budgeting, accounting, contract negotiations, regulatory interaction, construction oversight, and operations. Qualifications include a bachelor's degree in engineering and at least three years of experience in an engineering, technical, or environmental field. Required skills are effective written and verbal communication, problem definition and data analysis, interpretation of contracts, regulations, permits, and procedural manuals, report drafting for state and local agencies, and proficiency with Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The work environment involves motor‑coordination tasks such as keyboarding and data entry, occasional handling of objects under 30 pounds, and exposure to physical risks associated with chemicals, fuels, wastewater, construction sites, odors, noise, and extreme weather. The role requires regional travel up to 20% of the time.
