Project Engineer (Primary Engineering)

About the Role

The role focuses on applications engineering, requiring detailed documentation and diagram preparation. You will provide technical expertise in designing and installing substation layouts for projects ranging from 400 kV down to 11 kV. Key duties include producing CAD‑based substation layout drawings that adhere to UK standards, developing technical specifications and material schedules, and performing conductor force calculations. You will also review and approve project documentation, ensure work packages meet programme timelines and budget, and support tender scheme development and scope documents. Additional responsibilities involve estimating engineering effort, contributing to monthly forecasts, participating in design and hazard review meetings, and offering on‑site technical support when needed. The position demands strong teamwork, analytical, and communication skills, as well as the ability to work under tight deadlines in high‑pressure environments. • Design and install substation layouts for 400 kV–11 kV projects. • Create CAD diagrams following UK standards. • Develop technical specifications and material schedules for primary equipment. • Perform conductor force calculations. • Review and approve project documentation against established standards. • Deliver assigned work packages on schedule and within budget. • Provide comments on delegated work and support tender scheme options. • Prepare engineering time estimates and monthly forecasts. • Participate in design and hazard review meetings. • Offer technical support on site as required.

What You Bring

Candidates must hold at least an HNC/HND in a relevant engineering discipline and have proven knowledge of transmission or distribution practices (400 kV to 11 kV). Proficiency with Windows, MS Office, AutoCAD, and familiarity with electricity supply industry standards (DNO/National Grid) are essential.
