About the Role

The Design Phase Manager will lead the project team through the design phase, ensuring alignment with scope, budget, and schedule, and a smooth transition to construction. Responsibilities include establishing and managing project budgets, creating and controlling schedules, obtaining regulatory approvals, handling bid packages, resolving technical design issues, and aligning design documents with execution plans. The manager acts as the primary contact for owners, architects, engineers, and trade partners, monitors project success factors, fosters integrated team communication, facilitates designer selection for design‑build projects, mentors team members, and presents project proposals. • Lead design‑phase teams to deliver on scope, budget, schedule and smooth construction handoff. • Develop and maintain project budgets, cost‑trend logs, and margin plans while minimizing risk. • Create and control project schedules, key milestones, and hold team members accountable. • Obtain all required regulatory approvals, permits, and manage bid packages and contract manuals. • Resolve technical design and specification issues and align documents with execution plans. • Serve as primary liaison with owners, architects, engineers, and trade partners. • Measure project success factors and foster integrated team communication and clear roles. • Guide designer selection and contracting for design‑build projects. • Mentor and coach design‑phase staff for career development and performance. • Prepare and present project proposals to stakeholders. • Build relationships across diverse backgrounds and organizational levels.

Mortenson is seeking an experienced Senior Design Phase Manager who can interact with staff at all levels in a dynamic environment, demonstrating flexibility, resourcefulness, proactivity, and professionalism while maintaining confidentiality. The role requires anticipating problems, critical issues, and opportunities, and creatively solving them to deliver viable solutions. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail are essential as the manager translates the owner’s vision into design solutions and construction parameters, potentially overseeing two projects simultaneously or one larger project. Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Construction Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, Estimating, or a related field and have a minimum of ten years of relevant experience. Required skills include risk management, active listening, effective communication, proficiency with Microsoft Office and project‑management web applications at an intermediate level, and the ability to travel up to 100 % of the time. The position offers a base pay range of $144,300 to $216,500, with higher ranges in select locations, and eligibility for Mortenson’s incentive plan.
