About the Role

Reporting to the GM Infrastructure and Assets, the Commercial Lead will provide commercial, financial, and contractual expertise to the Transport Infrastructure and Assets line of business, ensuring projects are commercially successful while maintaining governance, compliance and risk management. The role may also involve managing staff within the Commercial team as directed by the Commercial Director and GM. The position is responsible for shaping and executing commercial strategies, negotiating upstream and downstream commercial positions, and fostering collaborative relationships with key stakeholders. It also includes delivering clear briefings on complex legal, technical and commercial issues, coordinating legal compliance, and leading the negotiation and finalisation of head contract terms and risk parameters. The role establishes contract commercial teams, communicates contractual rights and obligations to project delivery teams, mentors Contract Administrators and Commercial Analysts, prepares and reviews head contracts, ensures insurance obligations are met, and manages the commercial handover from tendering to projects. • Lead formulation and execution of commercial strategies to maximize profitability of transport projects. • Negotiate and settle upstream and downstream commercial positions to protect UGL interests. • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with key stakeholders and ensure effective communication between Group Commercial team and Transport sector. • Provide clear briefings, analysis, and summaries of legal, technical, and commercial bid and contract issues for non‑specialist audiences and executives. • Coordinate legal compliance with internal and external legal advisors. • Negotiate and finalize head contract terms, conditions, and project risk parameters in line with UGL Tender Policy and risk appetite; prepare business cases for senior executives. • Establish contract commercial teams and communicate contractual rights and obligations to project delivery teams. • Lead, mentor, and develop Contract Administrators and Commercial Analysts. • Prepare, review, and negotiate head contracts and commercial documents with clients. • Ensure insurance obligations for head contracts are met by liaising with insurance representatives. • Facilitate effective commercial handover from tendering to project delivery.

What You Bring

Ideal candidates hold a degree in Engineering, Law or Construction Management (preferred but not essential) and have a strong background in Quantity Surveying. They must demonstrate the ability to manage complex stakeholder relationships, possess solid knowledge of project management and contract/legal principles, be skilled in interpreting project reports, and exhibit high integrity and interpersonal skills for handling confidential situations.
