About the Role

The Geotechnical Area Business Class Leader will provide area leadership for technical capabilities within the Geospatial Business Class, overseeing staffing, resource balancing, and utilization while championing marketing opportunities and supporting proposals to drive growth across market sectors. This cross‑sector role requires coordination with all business groups, delivery of technical expertise, maintenance of QA/QC standards, and promotion of teamwork, communication, and work sharing among offices and classes. HDR expects leaders to build strong client relationships, motivate direct reports, and contribute strategic insights on business trends, while ensuring efficient use of GIS technology, mentoring staff, and demonstrating a proactive, problem‑solving attitude. • Lead technical capabilities within the Geospatial Business Class for the area. • Manage project staffing, resource balancing, and Business Class utilization with PMs and managers. • Drive marketing opportunities to grow the geospatial practice. • Support area pursuits and contribute to proposal development. • Promote top‑line growth across market sectors in the technical focus area. • Prioritize Business Class activities in Southern California to meet sector objectives. • Coordinate cross‑sector services across business groups as needed. • Provide technical input on project discipline requirements and supervise staff. • Ensure QA/QC procedures and best practices are maintained. • Monitor area performance, set goals, and assist in corrective actions. • Lead technical sector growth within the area. • Facilitate teamwork, communication, and work sharing among offices and classes. • Act as client manager, project principal, and project manager. • Participate in or manage projects to meet utilization targets. • Serve as senior technical resource on projects and programs. • Build and retain relationships with staff, PMs, and client development managers. • Offer strategic and tactical insights on business trends for planning. • Manage staff workloads, recommend adjustments, and recruit as needed. • Oversee training, licensing, and continuing‑education opportunities. • Ensure efficient use of GIS technology and develop mentoring programs. • Identify project staffing needs and recruit professionals.

What You Bring

• Demonstrate a “can‑do” problem‑solver attitude to colleagues and clients. • Exhibit strong client relationship, communication, negotiation, and presentation skills. • Motivate and manage direct reports effectively. • Bachelor’s degree in Geographic Information Systems or related field. • Minimum 10 years leading GIS projects and teams. • Proven ability to manage large statewide Geospatial programs and staff. • Experience budgeting, scoping, and cost estimating. • Strong written, verbal, and listening communication skills. • High attention to detail and strong leadership/organizational abilities. • Ability to meet tight deadlines and prioritize multiple projects. • Knowledge of applicable laws, policies, and procedures for projects. • Experience creating and managing training, staffing, marketing, and business budgets. • Advanced analytical and problem‑solving skills. • Experience with contract development and capital improvement implementation. • Proactive, self‑starter attitude with strong project management skills. • Expertise in data analysis and cartographic standards. • Proficiency with ArcGIS, its extensions, Microsoft 365, MS Office, SharePoint. • Esri certification; GISP, AICP, PE or other professional certifications a plus. • Understanding of civil engineering terminology preferred. • Prior personnel supervision experience. • Bachelor’s degree in professional, architecture, engineering or related field. • At least 10 years of relevant experience. • Professional or engineering registration with related technical experience. • Proven experience developing and managing diverse teams. • Ability to collaborate with business class leaders, operations managers, technical directors, and marketing managers.
