About the Role

We are recruiting a Principal Engineer to serve as Deputy Facility Safety Case Owner (FSCO) for Rolls‑Royce Submarines – Vulcan. The role supports the nuclear facilities at the Vulcan Naval Reactor Test Establishment (NRTE) and is responsible for maintaining the safety envelope that underpins the operation of systems, structures and components. You will work within a team of facility safety case owners, safety case practitioners and assurance staff, reporting to the Vulcan Chief Engineer. The site is currently delivering significant programmes of work, providing an excellent opportunity to develop nuclear‑industry experience. Key accountabilities include assisting the FSCO to maintain a safe envelope and provide safety oversight for nuclear facilities and key programmes, ensuring safety implications of changes are fully considered and approved through site due process, and applying the ALARP principle to optimise safety. You will also provide practical technical advice on site safety management, facility and process safety cases, and act as cover for the FSCO with comparable qualifications. • Assist the FSCO in maintaining a safe operational envelope for nuclear facilities and key site programmes. • Ensure safety implications of changes are evaluated, sponsored, and approved via site due process. • Apply the ALARP principle to optimise facility safety. • Provide technical advice on site safety management, facility and process safety cases. • Act as cover for the FSCO, meeting comparable qualification levels.

What You Bring

The ideal candidate embraces our safety‑first principles, holds a degree in engineering or a science‑based subject (or equivalent industry experience), and has experience working in an engineering discipline. Experience in the nuclear industry or other highly regulated environments, proven safety case development and review, strong communication skills, ability to produce well‑structured reports, project‑management capability and a commitment to continuous improvement are essential. Professional registration with a recognised institute is desirable.
