About the Role
Reporting to the Chief of Emerging Technologies, you will join a dynamic, agile team and collaborate with specialists across Future Technologies and Future Programmes. The position focuses on assessing disruptive technologies and system‑level concepts to support Rolls‑Royce’s energy transition and Net‑Zero agenda. The Emerging Technologies team conducts Horizon Scanning, evaluating emerging threats and opportunities through scientific appraisal. Your work will provide the fundamental understanding of cycle‑level benefits from novel architectures, working fluids and technologies, feeding into Future Platforms’ economic and business‑case analyses that shape product strategy. Day‑to‑day duties include process modelling and simulation, leading benchmarking studies to guide company strategy, and presenting findings to senior stakeholders. The role offers the chance to influence the future of clean power while working for a world‑renowned brand known for safety, reliability and innovation. • Model thermodynamic and advanced gas turbine cycles using simulation tools such as NPSS. • Conduct process modelling, simulation and benchmarking studies to inform strategy. • Provide scientific assessments of novel system architectures, working fluids and technologies. • Present technical findings and recommendations to senior stakeholders. • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams across Future Technologies and Future Programmes. • Operate autonomously, manage ambiguity and drive sustainability‑focused initiatives. • Contribute to Rolls‑Royce’s Net‑Zero and energy transition objectives.

Rolls-Royce Future Technology is recruiting a Novel Cycles Engineer in Derby (Moor Lane) to design thermodynamic cycles and model performance for new power generation and gas turbine concepts. The role requires expertise in modelling unconventional advanced cycles and proficient use of simulation, design and integration tools. Candidates must hold a degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or a related technical field and possess deep knowledge of thermodynamics. Essential skills include cycles modelling, proficiency with Numerical Propulsion System Simulation (NPSS), and experience modelling chemical processes is desirable. Strong interpersonal and communication abilities are required, with a talent for presenting complex topics to diverse audiences.
