About the Role
In this position, the design phase manager is accountable for guiding the project team through the design stage to deliver a strong customer experience, meet financial targets and ensure a seamless handoff to construction. Core duties include aligning scope, budget and schedule, securing regulatory approvals, managing design documents, and overseeing bid packages and contracts. • Lead design phase team to deliver customer experience, financial performance, and smooth construction transition • Align scope, budget, and schedule; ensure construction readiness • Establish and track project budgets, scope expectations, and cost trends • Create and manage schedules, milestones, and hold team accountable • Obtain regulatory approvals and permits • Align design documents with execution plan • Prepare bid packages and contract manuals • Resolve technical design and specification issues • Develop/review margin plans to minimize risk and capture opportunities • Serve as primary contact with owners, architects, engineers, and trade partners • Monitor and measure project success factors • Foster integrated team collaboration with clear roles and communication • Facilitate designer selection and contracting for design‑build projects • Mentor and guide design phase staff for career growth • Develop and present project proposals • Build relationships across diverse backgrounds and organizational levels • Lead by example, coach, provide feedback, and manage performance

What You Bring
Mortenson is seeking an experienced Senior Design Phase Manager who can interact with staff at all levels in a dynamic environment. The role requires flexibility, resourcefulness, proactive problem‑solving and a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality. The manager translates the owner’s vision into design solutions and construction parameters while leading the design process and team members, and may handle one large or multiple projects simultaneously. The ideal candidate holds a bachelor’s degree in a construction‑related field and brings at least ten years of relevant experience. They must demonstrate strong analytical abilities, effective communication, and be able to travel extensively. Proficiency with standard office and project software is required. • Bachelor’s degree in construction engineering, architecture, construction management, estimating or related field • Minimum 10 years of relevant experience • Strong risk‑management expertise • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office, project and web applications • Excellent active listening and communication skills, open to diverse input • Ability to travel up to 100% of the time • Knowledge of EEO, inclusive behaviors, and affirmative action plans • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. without visa sponsorship

Benefits
Compensation is competitive, with a base salary ranging from $144,300 to $216,500, adjusted upward for certain office locations, and eligibility for Mortenson’s incentive plan.
