About the Role

The primary role of the Fire Alarm Designer is to design fire alarm systems for Johnson Controls projects, acting as a design lead on large, complex multi‑faceted projects and directing other members of the design team supporting these projects. The designer organizes and plans their own workload, helps direct less‑experienced team members, and collaborates with other design teams when required. They facilitate reviews of medium‑complexity designs to provide value‑engineered, code‑compliant solutions and coordinate with CAD Support Technicians to prepare detailed technical submissions that meet design criteria. They oversee CAD Support Technicians in preparing project submissions, including system operation documents, drawings, and calculations, and complete detailed calculations to verify that designs meet code and standard requirements. The role also involves participating in pre/post‑project design meetings, attending customer/site coordination sessions, developing bills of materials for construction, examining completed submissions for equipment compatibility and specification compliance, and supporting Project Managers to maintain or improve project margins. • Design fire alarm systems and lead large, complex projects. • Organize workload and mentor less‑experienced design team members. • Review and value‑engineer medium‑complexity designs for code compliance. • Coordinate with CAD Support Technicians to produce detailed schematics and drawings. • Oversee preparation of system operation documents, drawings, and calculations. • Perform calculations to verify designs meet code and standards. • Participate in pre‑ and post‑project design meetings and customer/site coordination. • Develop bills of materials to support construction. • Review completed submissions for equipment suitability and specification compliance. • Assist Project Managers with order support to maintain or improve project margins.

What You Bring

A minimum of five years’ experience in fire and security system design is required, along with NICET Level II certification (or Level I with attainability to Level II) and preferably Level III. Candidates should be experienced with NFPA 72, fire alarm, security, nurse‑call, CCTV, and construction industry standards, possess strong drafting/CAD skills, and be proficient in reading architectural and electrical diagrams. Knowledge of electronic building systems, mechanical system interfaces, Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe, and effective communication skills are also necessary; a high school diploma is required and a bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred. • Minimum five years’ fire and security system design experience. • NICET Level II certification (Level I with attainability acceptable); Level III preferred. • Proficiency with NFPA 72 and related fire alarm, security, nurse‑call, CCTV systems. • Strong drafting/CAD skills and ability to read architectural and electrical diagrams. • Knowledge of electronic building systems and mechanical system interfaces. • Experience with estimating, pricing, and project management. • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Access, Word, Outlook) and Adobe. • Effective written and oral communication skills. • Ability to obtain required licenses and travel locally as needed. • High school diploma required; bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Drafting preferred.

Benefits

The salary range for this position is $86,000‑$118,000, determined by education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, internal equity, and market data.
