About the Role

Key duties include developing the traffic engineering business, managing projects, recruiting and developing staff, maintaining client relationships, and coordinating with peers across AECOM’s surface transportation line. Typical projects involve ITS planning, traffic analysis, signal and lighting design, and MOT. • Lead, build, and support a team delivering traffic analysis, forecasting, safety studies, simulation, and conceptual planning/design. • Produce plan sheets, specifications, estimates, technical memoranda, reports, presentations, and other documentation. • Manage ITS or emerging technology projects using the systems engineering process. • Serve as project manager, technical leader, expert advisor, or quality control on traffic/ITS projects. • Participate in the production of technical deliverables such as plans, specifications, estimates, reports, and memorandums. • Provide technical leadership and supervision of tasks, reviewing junior staff work and project documentation. • Deliver assigned tasks on schedule and budget while adhering to AECOM quality standards. • Coordinate with internal discipline groups, external clients, and sub‑consultants. • Perform work within agreed budget and schedule with minimal supervision. • Independently complete primary design elements for engineering works. • Collaborate with Business Development leaders to capture project opportunities.

What You Bring

The firm is seeking an experienced traffic engineer for immediate placement in Waterloo, IA (or Des Moines, IA) to lead and grow the traffic engineering practice in Iowa. The role will collaborate with local leadership and serve clients such as the Iowa DOT, City of Waterloo, and City of Cedar Falls. Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering (or related field) with a minimum of eight years of relevant experience, and a professional traffic operations engineer (PTOE) certification is preferred. Preferred qualifications include a master’s degree, 12+ years of experience, an Iowa PE license (or ability to obtain within six months), and familiarity with MicroStation, AutoCAD, Synchro, VISSIM, and emerging technology projects.
