Assistant Staff Biologist - Shorebird Monitor
Monitor shorebird activity at construction sites and coordinate with crews and regulators.
Job Highlights
About the Role
• Monitor active construction site daily (7:30 AM‑3:30 PM, Mon‑Fri) in all weather conditions. • Act as liaison between construction crews and project managers. • Coordinate with construction crews, project partners, and land access. • Monitor breeding bird locations and maintain symbolic fencing. • Complete medium‑complexity tasks with oversight and work independently on standard tasks. • Manage field crew progress, data transfer, and field data QA/QC. • Collect, synthesize, and analyze wildlife, plant, upland, and aquatic data. • Write deliverable sections under direction and apply regulatory knowledge. • Follow safety program and promptly address hazards. • Communicate effectively with contractors, regulators, and the public while working independently.

What You Bring
Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, conservation, or a related discipline and have prior shorebird monitoring experience that qualifies them for state and federal certification. The role demands strong independent work habits, effective communication with contractors, regulators, and the public, and the ability to obtain U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service shorebird monitor approval. Preferred applicants bring two field seasons of shorebird work, especially with piping plover and red knot in New York. • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, conservation, or related field. • Possess prior shorebird monitoring experience and be eligible for state/federal shorebird monitor certification. • Obtain qualification as a shorebird monitor from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. • (Preferred) Two field seasons of shorebird monitoring experience. • (Preferred) Experience with piping plover, red knot, and other protected shorebirds in New York. • Have full hearing and color vision, a valid driver’s license, and eligibility to work in the U.S.
