About the Role
The engineer will guide the Richmond design team, mentor staff, and cultivate client relationships to grow business opportunities. Responsibilities include managing project scope, schedule, budget, and profitability while overseeing the preparation of plans, specifications, and proposals, and coordinating with other design disciplines such as structures, hydraulics, traffic, and utilities. • Lead and mentor the Richmond civil/roadway design team. • Maintain and expand client relationships with VDOT and local agencies. • Manage project scope, schedule, budget, and profitability, overseeing plans and specifications. • Direct conceptual, preliminary, and final design tasks, including construction documents and calculations. • Coordinate with structures, hydraulics, traffic, utilities, and other design disciplines. • Prepare and review Plans, Specifications, and Estimates (PS&E) and technical proposals. • Ensure compliance with AASHTO, VDOT guidelines, and WSP’s Code of Conduct. • Provide critical review of complex design documents and deliver high‑quality technical deliverables.

What You Bring
Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and possess at least ten years of post‑graduation experience, including a Virginia Professional Engineer license. Proficiency with MicroStation, Geopak SS4/OpenRoads Designer, AutoCAD, and Civil3D, as well as deep knowledge of AASHTO and VDOT design standards, is required. Preferred qualifications include experience with design‑build, P3, or CM/GC delivery models, familiarity with local county and city standards, and competence in scheduling tools like MS Project or Primavera. The position offers a hybrid work model, occasional travel, and flexible scheduling to meet business needs. • Hold a BS in Civil Engineering with 10+ years of relevant experience. • Possess a Virginia PE license (multi‑state preferred). • Proficient in MicroStation, Geopak SS4/OpenRoads Designer; familiar with AutoCAD and Civil3D. • Strong knowledge of civil construction laws, codes, and QA/QC processes. • Excellent written and verbal communication for technical and non‑technical audiences. • Ability to work independently and lead mid‑ to senior‑level team members. • Proficient in technical writing, spreadsheets, and office automation tools. • Demonstrated safety record and adherence to WSP health, safety, and harassment policies. • Experience with design‑build, P3, or CM/GC delivery methods is highly desirable. • Familiarity with Henrico, Chesterfield, and City of Richmond project standards. • Knowledge of MS Project or Primavera scheduling software. • Leadership or affiliation with professional engineering societies.
