About the Role
The Staff Engineer role involves planning and conducting work that requires independent judgment in subsurface exploration, engineering analysis, reporting, and construction project oversight, reporting to the location manager and senior staff. The Staff Engineer assists projects from inception to completion, prepares technical and cost proposals, oversees field technicians, conducts engineering analyses, reviews laboratory test results, and delivers scheduled, budget‑constrained deliverables while meeting chargeability and detail standards. • Support project managers and senior staff in planning and executing complex projects. • Review work products for compliance with the Quality Control Manual. • Develop and improve subsurface exploration techniques and procedures. • Supervise and coordinate field technicians and other supporting personnel. • Prepare and review technical and cost proposals and deliverables. • Observe and approve foundation excavations, shoring, and cut‑and‑fill slopes on construction sites. • Manage subsurface explorations, including borehole sampling, instrumentation installation, and subcontractor oversight.

What You Bring
This hybrid position is based in Irvine, requiring three days per week in the office and ideally located within an hour's commute. Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (a Master’s is a plus), possess an Engineer-in‑Training certification, be working toward PE licensure, and have at least three years of geotechnical field engineering experience, with construction experience viewed favorably. Required knowledge and skills include familiarity with regulatory requirements and industry standards, excellent communication and writing abilities, sound professional judgment, strong time‑management, willingness to travel, a valid driver’s license, and effective teamwork and problem‑solving capabilities. The role demands the ability to lift up to 50 pounds, extended computer work, intermittent walking, standing, kneeling, and occasional out‑of‑hours or out‑of‑town assignments, with a truck or SUV needed for field investigations; reasonable accommodations are available for disabilities. • Hold a Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering (Master’s preferred) and an EIT certification; work toward PE licensure. • Minimum three years of geotechnical field engineering experience required. • Knowledge of current regulatory requirements and industry standards. • Excellent communication, writing, and interpersonal skills. • Demonstrated professional judgment, attention to detail, and time‑management abilities. • Willingness to travel with a valid driver’s license and insurable driving record. • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lb, sit at a computer for extended periods, and perform intermittent field activities. • Access to a truck or SUV for field investigations.

Benefits
