About the Role
The operator is responsible for the safe and reliable operation of hydro generating systems and the 69 kV Western/Valley transmission network using SCADA and related energy‑management tools. Duties include maintaining voltage within limits, dispatching generation to meet schedule or Balancing Authority directives, managing head‑pond levels, logging activities, and coordinating emergency‑response crews. The role also requires communicating outage information to customers and stakeholders and issuing hold‑offs and isolation permits as the SPC Control Authority. • Operate hydro generating and 69 kV transmission systems using SCADA and related software. • Maintain voltage levels within normal and emergency operating limits. • Assist the Transmission System Operator in bulk power system management. • Dispatch hydro generation according to daily schedules or Balancing Authority instructions. • Manage head‑pond operations at hydro sites while complying with environmental permits. • Maintain accurate, detailed operational logs. • Coordinate tactical dispatch and deployment of routine and emergency‑response crews. • Communicate outage information promptly to customers, DCC, and other stakeholders. • Interpret color‑coded system information and respond to SCADA alarms. • Issue hold‑offs and isolation permits as SPC Control Authority and ensure SPC compliance. • Approve and direct switching of transmission and generation equipment and oversee restoration activities. • Participate in competency‑based training; NERC certification may become required. • Work 12‑hour rotating shifts, averaging 42 hours per week, with availability for emergency shifts. • Ensure personal and coworker safety by following Occupational Health and Safety regulations. • Maintain environmental performance in line with the EMS processes.

What You Bring
Candidates must have at least three years of experience in an electric‑utility environment, prior system‑operator experience or NERC certification, and strong teamwork, problem‑resolution, and leadership abilities. Proficiency with computer applications, the ability to work independently under stress, and a willingness to complete competency‑based training are essential. A degree or technologist credential in electrical devices/power‑system operation, or an equivalent trade background, may be considered for apprentice operators. • Comply with Emera’s Alcohol and Drug Policy, including pre‑employment testing.
