About the Role

The engineer will be responsible for a broad range of electrical and communications systems, such as AC/DC power, fiber‑optic installation and testing, and various telecommunications protocols. Core ITS duties include managing traffic signal controllers, field surveillance equipment, detection technologies, advanced traffic management systems, and related camera and messaging hardware. The role also involves Microsoft SQL Server database administration, data analysis with Excel and Access, reading system design drawings, and ensuring system reliability in mission‑critical environments while mentoring technical staff. • Design, install, operate, repair, relocate, and maintain TMC field and central hardware/software systems. • Oversee system technicians and provide mentorship and training. • Manage AC/DC power systems, fiber‑optic cabling, and telecommunications (cellular, serial, TCP/IP). • Maintain traffic signal controllers, surveillance cameras, detection technologies, and ATMS. • Administer Microsoft SQL Server databases and generate reports. • Perform system monitoring, troubleshooting, and problem resolution in 24/7/365 environments. • Interpret system design and record drawings accurately. • Uphold workplace safety, ethical decision‑making, and adherence to WSP policies. • Develop conceptual ITS designs through construction, integration, and testing phases. • Lead research and development of advanced ITS technologies and document outcomes. • Draft and review Intelligent Transportation Systems specifications and RFPs. • Identify emerging technologies and opportunities for innovation and grant funding. • Coordinate information flow between ITS contracts and TMC operations staff.

WSP is seeking an Intelligent Transportation Systems Engineer IV for its Hawthorne, NY office. The role is a senior technical and supervisory position that provides advanced IT design and support for Transportation Management Center (TMC) operations while overseeing system technicians. The engineer works closely with the TMC Manager and the NYSDOT ITS Coordinator to manage the full lifecycle of field and central hardware and software systems, including installation, operation, repair, relocation, and maintenance, often requiring work outside normal business hours. Required qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Computer Science, Information Sciences, or a related field, and at least ten years of progressively responsible experience in system design, development, or database administration. Candidates must possess strong networking knowledge, excellent oral and written communication skills, proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, and demonstrated personnel management experience. A valid driver’s license, willingness to travel to field sites, and a commitment to safety, ethics, and WSP’s Code of Conduct are also essential. Preferred qualifications add a Master’s degree, standard IT networking certifications (e.g., CCNA, CCNP), and knowledge of Connected Vehicle technologies. Experience in developing ITS concepts through construction, integration, and testing, as well as research and development of advanced ITS solutions, is valued. The ideal candidate can author RFPs, draft ITS specifications, understand the full ITS architecture, and facilitate communication between installation contracts and TMC operations. • Collaborate with NYSDOT, WSP, and other stakeholders using strong communication skills. • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering or computing field. • Minimum 10 years of experience in system design, development, or database administration. • Demonstrate networking and IT infrastructure management expertise. • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and database tools. • Exhibit proven personnel management, mentoring, and training abilities. • Maintain a valid driver’s license and travel to field locations as needed. • Preferred: Master’s degree and certifications such as CCNA, CCNP, or Network+. • Preferred: Knowledge of V2X, V2V, and V2I connected‑vehicle technologies.
