About the Role

The position involves inspecting vessels and peripheral equipment before each voyage to ensure safe, efficient operation and compliance with regulations and company policies. The incumbent uses navigational equipment, weather forecasts, and tide/current predictions to safeguard the vessel and crew, and operates the vessel in oceans, bays, lakes, rivers, or coastal waters when authorized. They work with supervisors to adjust float and work plans based on changing environmental conditions and direct crew activities while deployed. Key responsibilities include deploying, towing, and anchoring containment booms and other spill‑response gear, maintaining all job‑related equipment in ready condition, and documenting vessel logs and inspections. The role provides clear direction to deckhands and passengers for safety, delivers continuous training in safety, seamanship, and basic navigation, conducts onboard safety drills, and completes required paperwork such as logbooks, charts, EPA discharge logs, and labeling. Additional duties may involve confined‑space entry, spill response, industrial maintenance, and other tasks assigned by the supervisor.

What You Bring

Preferred qualifications emphasize knowledge of vessel equipment, navigation, electrical and mechanical systems, as well as policies and procedures for protection of self and others. The employee must demonstrate accuracy, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities within deadlines. Required or preferred certifications can include a TWIC, Merchant Mariner Credential, local boating certificates, state‑specific HAZWOPER and refresher certificates, CPR/First Aid, Marine Crane Operator, and Cold‑Water Survival certifications.

Minimum qualifications are at least one year of related maritime experience and a valid driver’s license that meets the company’s Motor Vehicle Record standards. The pay range for this role is $23.40 to $32.17 per hour, varying by locality.
