About the Role

The inspector will perform field observation and documentation for MDOT and other DOT and municipal projects, covering railroads, roadways, bridges, traffic signals, underground infrastructure, and ITS, while coordinating travel and inspection schedules with independent judgment. The position requires collecting and analyzing diverse site data, conducting inspections of moderate to high complexity, providing technical assistance, acting as consultant for progress and problem resolution, and delivering final comprehensive inspections with written and oral feedback. • Perform field observation and documentation for MDOT and other DOT/municipal construction projects. • Coordinate travel and inspection schedules for rail and infrastructure sites using independent judgment. • Collect, compile, and analyze data from surveys, plans, blueprints, technical drawings, and material samples. • Conduct inspections of moderate to high‑complexity projects, checking site conditions, equipment, materials, and alignment for code compliance. • Provide technical assistance and guidance on proper construction and functioning of highways, bridges, and infrastructure. • Serve as consultant on work progress, resolve plan and specification discrepancies, and may act as sole inspector on projects. • Conduct initial, follow‑up, and final inspections, delivering written and oral feedback on findings. • Verify load calculations, change orders, and contract interpretations, resolving differences as needed. • Monitor project phasing and contractor work to ensure quality control and contract compliance. • Lead or support inspection staff on technical or field assignments, occasionally directing tasks. • Attend pre‑construction meetings and respond to contractor inquiries. • Calculate contractor payments based on completed work. • Produce technical reports using photographs, sketches, calculations, software, and 2D/3D illustrations. • Assist project managers and contractors with risk identification, assessment, and mitigation planning. • Prepare inspection plans, coordinate field work, and review staffing and equipment utilization. • Provide guidance and training to entry‑level inspection staff. • Communicate with clients and contractors to schedule and coordinate inspections. • Stay current with latest inspection techniques, construction knowledge, and best practices. • Uphold ethical decision‑making, company policies, and WSP’s Code of Conduct.

What You Bring

Candidates must have a high school diploma, at least five years of construction‑inspection experience (including MDOT or similar agency work preferred), a valid driver’s license, intermediate knowledge of inspection principles and codes, strong technical writing and analytical skills, and the ability to lead and train junior staff while adhering to safety and ethical standards.
