About the Role
The Pipe Layer reports to the Foreman and Civil Superintendent and is classified as non‑exempt. The role involves assisting the utility crew in the installation and modification of sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and water utilities, primarily working in excavated trenches. Daily duties involve preparing trench work areas, operating small equipment, assembling pipe fittings, verifying grades with lasers, fine‑grading bedding, and completing backfill operations. The employee also supports concrete related tasks, asphalt patching, and ensures proper use of personal protective equipment. Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions and may involve exposure to noise, diesel fumes, and other site hazards. Travel is required as needed during scheduled work hours. • Assist in laying or modifying sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and water utilities. • Operate safely in shored trenches and confined spaces. • Assemble utility fittings using impact, hammer, and core drills, demo saws, and wrenches. • Perform concrete‑related tasks such as manhole bases, inlets, patching, and core drilling. • Shoot grades with transit or pipe lasers to achieve correct elevations and fall percentages. • Support asphalt patching in street cuts for utility installations. • Operate small equipment like skidsteers and trench compactors as needed. • Prepare trench boxes, lay out materials, and perform miscellaneous labor. • Use task‑specific PPE (face shield, chainsaw chaps, respirator, gloves) when required. • Apply math skills to calculate elevations and percentage of fall. • Read and interpret survey staking documents. • Remain standing or kneeling for extended periods. • Lift and carry tools or supplies up to 50 lb.

What You Bring
Candidates should have a high school diploma or GED and 2‑4 years of experience installing sanitary, storm, and water utilities, including trench safety, shoring, and hand‑tool operation. Required skills include basic math for grade calculations and the ability to read survey staking. The position requires prolonged standing, kneeling, and lifting up to 50 lb, as well as clear hearing and vision, and the dexterity to handle tools in a physically demanding environment. • Fine‑grade pipe bedding to meet elevation and slope requirements. • Wear required daily PPE (hard hat, safety vest, glasses, steel‑toe boots) provided by JHL. • Hold a high school diploma or GED (preferred). • Have 2–4 years of experience installing sanitary, storm, and water utilities. • Demonstrated experience with trench safety, shoring, and small‑tool operation. • Maintain clear hearing and vision, with or without corrective lenses. • Possess dexterity to manipulate tools and materials safely.
